New feature alert: CarPlay

Hello instructors,
Did you know that 9% of learning now happens in the background — a sign that audio learning may be on the rise?
To stay on top of this trend, we have some exciting news — CarPlay is now available for the Udemy iOS app.
When learners sync their iOS device in vehicles with CarPlay, they’ll be able to safely and seamlessly stream or listen to downloaded audio content from your courses. The audio-focused experience is perfect for absorbing or reinforcing learning in a driving environment.
Key learner benefits include:
- Hands-free voice command and steering wheel controls for safer learning
- The ability to automatically skip non-audio content, and return to it when not driving
- The end of Bluetooth pairing issues
Update your Udemy app to try CarPlay and help share the news with your learners by making an announcement. We’ll keep you posted on learner engagement with this feature to help you design or update your courses.
P.S. We are also working on rolling out a similar feature for Android learners. Stay tuned!

Interesting. Does this mean that our courses need to be recorded in such a way that it makes sense to audio-only learners?

Hi @Rudranil Chakrabortty
, good question!We recommend creating course content that’s best suited to reach your learner audience & their needs. When creating a course, think about creating a learning experience that’s accessible and offers learners options on how, when, and where they can learn. We’re beginning to see an uptick on audio learning on our Mobile apps. With this and future launches, we’ll keep you posted on increased learner interest for audio-based learning content.

That is excellent, is Udemy willing to share the split between Android/iOS/other for mobile users?

Sounds like a strange priority of development resources to be honest...

@Bella
thank you for the update. Sounds like a great feature.I'm super confused about what audio content you are referring to.
Are you talking about the audio tracks of the video lectures?
Or there's a way to upload audio only content? If that's the case, is Udemy allowing audio-only courses now?
And what if I have content that can be both good as a video content and audio only content, how do I make both available without duplicating the content in the same course?
Thank you.

Hi @MichaelPog
great question! Yes, we're talking about the audio tracks of the video lectures.
To better explain, CarPlay is a feature that lets learners connect their iPhone to their car, so they can easily & safely use their mobile apps while driving. Udemy iOS learners with CarPlay-enabled vehicles can now access and navigate the app using their car’s infotainment system to listen to lectures, both downloaded and streamed.
Here’s more info about CarPlay if you're interested in learning more about how it works!Bella Almeida

@Bella
thank you for the detailed explanation. Is this available for UFB students? If so is the revenue for audio only consumption equivalent to video content consumption?Thank you

Thanks for following up, @MichaelPog. Unfortunately, no. CarPlay is currently available for marketplace and Personal Plan learners who have downloaded the Udemy iOS app version 8.28.1.
We're currently monitoring the performance of the CarPlay on the consumer native app to identify and make adjustments before deciding and releasing the feature on the Udemy Business native app.Bella Almeida
