About the November 4 updates to the Promotions Policy

Earlier today, you should have received an email about a few updates to the Promotions Policy that will take effect November 4, 2020. While we've pre-announced several of these changes, we wanted to be sure you have a chance to read more about them and ask any questions you have.

Here's a summary:

  • As announced in April 2020, the Percentage Promotions program will sunset. If you're already opted into Fixed-Price Promotions, this won't affect you.
  • Indonesia will join country markets like Brazil, Australia, and South Africa in having no pre-set minimum price for courses in Udemy Deals.
  • The monthly calculation for Udemy for Business student consumption will update to include time spent on quizzes and coding exercises.
  • The Promotions Policy will update to include the official terms for the Udemy Subscription Program ("Udemy Pro").

You can read more about these changes in the Teaching Center.

As always, we welcome your questions and feedback here in the Community.

Update: as of November 4, 2020, these changes are now live. Feel free to continue to ask questions here in the Community.

Hi. How is it going to affect my courses and the way Udemy does it's marketing? How do I know if i have already opted into Fixed-Price Promotions? Does it mean that now my courses will no more be sold in approx 10 USD after Udemy's automatic discount as earlier?

Hi @drkrisharma -

If you’re currently opted into Fixed Price Promotions, there will be no change to how Udemy markets your courses. Our strategy hasn’t changed; our terms are just being clarified to more precisely describe how we approach discounts.

If you’re currently opted into only Percentage Deals and you make no change, then Udemy will stop including your course in new discount promotions after November 4th. If you want to continue to be included in discount promotions using Udemy’s course-specific discounting system, please opt into Fixed Price Promotions before November 4.

You can check your current settings and make changes to them here.

Thank you,

Lili - Udemy Community Manager

Thanks Lili! I checked my promotional agreement and I find that I had selected both percentage and fixed price promotions. Do I need to deselect the percentage promotion while keeping fixed price promotion selected? Or I just leave it as it is and when Udemy removes percentage promotion, my fixed price promotion will remain?!

@drkrisharma - if you have already opted into Fixed-Price Promotions, then no action is required.

@Lilican you explain what this part means?

"Indonesia will join country markets like Brazil, Australia, and South Africa in having no pre-set minimum price for courses in Udemy Deals.".

What does it mean that those countries don't have a pre-set minimum price?

Lili

Hi @CarlosDeLeon - these countries do have minimum promotional prices. However, rather than having a pre-set, specific floor price named in the Promotions Policy, the floor price for these countries is updated on an ongoing basis. You can read more about this in the article here: Upcoming changes to the Udemy Promotions Policy

Hi,

How are you going to calculate the time learners spent on quizzes?
Are you going to have a timer as we have in Practice tests?

Hi @EshantGarg, thanks for your question on the November 4 promo policy updates. As part of the updates, Udemy for Business consumption will include minutes learners actively spend taking quizzes and working on coding exercises. Consumption will be tracked on the backend based on learner activity and engagement in the quiz and coding exercise experience.

Hi ,

I am Little confused on what program i was part of , can you help ?

I was not part of max discount group where courses go for 10-5 dollar

However i was part of program where my courses went for max 70-85 percent discount. Now i dont see that option anymore.

Did I miss something? as I don't see any discount on my courses anymore. Please help me understand.

Read more on it , so percent program is completely gone and only who are ok to sell their course at 10 dollar are allowed to give deals, right? Those who don't opt for it will never see strike through on their course price tag, right? Just to confirm so I can adjust my course prices.

However Udemy will keep on promoting the courses via their advt and affiliate network, is that correct?

Hi @LearnAnywhe151 -

Per the Promotions Policy, participating in the Deals Program allows Udemy to offer your content to students at a discounted price or list price no lower than $10 USD (or local equivalent), except in Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey and sales to Udemy's resellers or distributors, where the price may be lower.

By participating in the Marketing Boost Program, you authorize Udemy to employ third parties, including resellers, distributors, affiliate sites, deal sites, and paid advertising on third-party platforms (together, “Advertising”) to promote your content.

You can check your current settings for promotional agreements and make changes to them here.

Hi @Lili . Can you confirm for me, when you refer to "Fixed Price Promotions " are you referring to the "Deals Program" and the "Marketing Boost Program" ? I have ticked everything on the "Manage Promotional Agreements" page but haven't had any sales since the 2nd November and wondering if it's related.

Cheers

Liam

Hi

I don't think I opted  into Fixed Price Promotions before 4th of November , can I do it now, I can't seem to find out where to go to do it?

@LiamDavin1 - Yes, "Fixed-Price" and the "Deals Program" are referring to the same thing.

Thank you @Lili.

Like LiamDavin1, I guess I'm just having a very poor month (nothing in October and nothing in November so far).  Just seems really odd, never happened before in years on Udemy?

I previously had the percent deals on and not the fixed price deals since I didn't want Udemy to sell my courses for $9.99 and internationally, much lower.

Since percent deals have been deleted, I have been trying the fixed price option since Udemy said their algorithm would adjust pricing base on sales. That definitely hasn't happened. My courses went from selling at $25 to selling for $9.99 and less. If the algorithm was considering past pricing, it would not have instantly dropped to $9.99. My typical income share has gone from $6-12 per student to as low as $0.79.

Does it bring me more students? Yes.
Did it increase my income? No. My income is now substantially lower and I will be turning off the Fixed Price deals to go back to controlling my own pricing.

If I turn off the Fixed price deals, will my course be for sale at the list price that I set? Since Udemy has been experimenting with list prices, I would like to know what happens in this case so I can set firm pricing on my courses.

@Tracey276 Yes, if you opt-out of the Deals Program, then you will set the prices for your courses. Please refer to the Promotions Policy for more information.
