Can we hear more about the development process? What testing was done on the new logo design, for example? Why is this better than the prior logo?

I was trying to download the graphics to replace some old graphics on my website, but I didn't fine a simple logo graphic. Is there a download that we can use?

the "I teach with Udemy" graphic is nice, but it does not include the logo. I would rather have the simple new logo to insert in various places without all the other words.

The graphics and color scheme are so vastly different from the previous, it may take me a bit to get used to it, but I like it. Feels a bit cleaner.

What I am really encouraged by though, is the shift in mentality. The wording makes it feel more like a partnership. I look forward to seeing how everything evolves.

The more I look at the graphics for us to download, the more puzzled I am. NONE of them include the new logo. In fact, they violate the discipline of the logo by using the regular type "Udemy" with a capital U, and never the logo we see in the upper left of this page. Why?

I am not going to go to the trouble of replacing the old logo use on my website until this is clarified. It doesn't make sense to give us graphics that are just verbage and no logo.

Honestly, it's upward Arrow only for Udemy and affiliates... Do I need to complete the sentence?

It's instructor who is earning a couple of peanuts for each enrollment.

Changing color, font, style and playing with words would make no difference in instructor's earning.

@ChrystieV ....

Not really. Sorry to be the resident pessimist, but it's a branding update. I'm not sure what this does for me, specifically. I mean, I'm looking at the search results for the primary keyword for my flagship course. I'm seeing most of my competitors' courses priced at $14.99, while mine is priced at $15.99. This branding update isn't going to make more people buy my course when similar courses are priced lower than mine.

Looks nice, but, ultimately, nothing that I expect to tangibly improve my sales or grow my presence here. People already know that Udemy is the place to go for cheap courses, whether the branding is green, red, or purple.

Instructors: "Udemy, your house is on fire!"

Udemy: "Look at the new paint we got."

Ugh...

@Anonymous  It’s okay I won’t take it personally! 🤓Udemy is investing in a number of programs that are aimed at moving towards delivering greater value. That's inclusive of our differentiated pricing programs which move away from evergreen discounts, as well as this refresh which presents a more elevated look & feel.  In fact, we would love some help as we move learners further along the value spectrum, and some of that comes from how instructors think and refer to the platform as well.

I will just say this and not comment on the comments of others.

a) I like it. But, I have no confidence in my own "liking" it. I do have confidence that Udemy has employed professionals with deep knowledge of branding and have done the required research so that the choice of this logo and branding is not about the "likes" of any instructor, or meeting the short term needs of any instructor, but is about consumer research.

b) Branding is not strategy, but it is foundational to strategy. Assuming this branding is a positive change, we are looking at only five percent of a strategic initiative to grow the business, and therefore our own revenue. I hope more about the strategy will be shared with us as we go forward.

I know the Udemy team has put a lot of effort into this and should be congratulated. We (most of us) do appreciate your efforts and helpful response to comments.

I'm looking forward to exploring the changes. But I would like to comment that the small purple dot by messages on the black background is now nearly impossible to see. I believe it was a red dot before. I was using this indicator to see if I had messages from students.

I saw some testing of the violet color on landing pages a few months back! Now I know what was going on haha! Clearly, this rebrand has been in the works for a while, and has gone through testing with the current user base (naturally).

I love that Udemy is keeping things fresh. When people see fresh branding (logo, colors, tone, etc.), branding that is modernized and keeping up with the times, it lets them know that Udemy is doing the same with everything else on the platform. They think: Fresh branding also means there are probably fresh courses, fresh content, fresh topics to reflect current needs, on and on. It's fantastic!

As instructors, it also lets us know that Udemy is serious about growth. So serious that they rebranded to prove it. Rebranding can be risky, because you lose the logo recognition people had prior; but it pays off when the company is seen as modernized, innovative, and forward-thinking. Which this new logo certainly communicates.

The mark is nice, I immediately thought: upward motion, growth, up-skilling. And the fact that the mark is over the "U" really emphasizes that Udemy is focused on YOUR growth, and up-skilling YOU. My second thought: it may be mistaken for a house. But that was my second thought, not first. 🙂 I'm certain that Udemy has tested this logo and the brand perception it envokes with users.

Regarding the line "I Teach With Udemy", my first impression was that it sounds like Udemy is just some tool I use to do my teaching (akin to, "I cook with Corningware"). Udemy is a big reputable brand; I want to associate myself with its credibility and prestige. I probably won't use the new hashtag/tag line because I don't think it does that.

The illustrations are very on-trend. That style very "in" right now. I don't know how long that illustration style will be considered the latest trend, but of course, Udemy will pivot as the trends change. That's just how it goes in the design world (same with fashion haha) 🙂

Overall, I love the new branding.

Does Udemy teach classes too? (Aside from their courses on how to teach Udemy courses.)
"I Teach With Udemy" sounds like we are partners, sitting in front of the camera teaching together. Or both posting courses to the platform together.

No crit is constructive without improvement suggestions, so...

  • "I Teach For Udemy" (sounds more reputable to me)
  • Or "I Teach At Udemy" (Udemy is an online academy, after all)...

I don't think these would put instructors at risk of sounding like employees, because employees say "I work at Udemy".

I'm sure the rebranding team tried out all the prepositions, but now it's the instructors' turn to have fun doing the same. Obviously, it won't change the hash/tag line, Udemy's decision on that is final. But still, for the sake of discussion about how instructors feel about the line. 🙂 Since we are the ones who would be using it after all.

Some blunt feedback - no offence meant - based on past experience in advertising and PR.,

Udemy is an online operation.

The name itself tells a newcomer (as I once was) nothing at all.

If an uptick is a "universal symbol" I never heard of it until now - and I'm 76.

But it looks good anyway:-)

And I do like the new uptick and letter U identifying my PC tabs.

However,  in the full logo,  a second line, small font, "online uni" would no doubt help newcomers quickly grasp what the brand is about.

"I teach WITH Udemy" is too vague for those first-time visitors. (My first reaction was "what's a Udemy?")

"I teach ON Udemy" (see the online connotation?) is more accurate if this is intended to be a message from an instructor.

Another phrase for consideration if you want to attract "learners" - "Learn Online - Udemy Uni."

As for switching from "students" to "learners," I prefer "students" instead of this obvious attempt at being "inclusive" and PC... speaking of which, where's the Caucasian - white person -  among all those gray-scale images?

As I said, blunt feedback - no offence meant.

My understanding is that Udemy aims to be accessible.

But the violet colour text on black background is extremely hard for many people to read.

This includes the breadcrumb and author links on Course Page headers.

Was an accessibility expert involved in the development process?

As an aside, to me, the colour scheme now looks similar to those sites that sell natural body products. They all seem to use this violet/purple.

Even so, it would be nice if it was readable.

Purple to me (I'm Italian) represents funeral services... it's bad luck 😞 And... why focusing on new look when there is so much missing on the platform? I can't even have my biography in multiple languages... and instead of delivering those basic and necessary features, you spend time and money on a new look??? New look, same technical problems... what's the point?

Awesome. Congratulations to Udemy and her great instructors and sudents. Thumbs up. Because the new look reflects freshnes, which has finally made me to arrive at the conclution that I don't need a course update ,but instead an upgrade of my course immediately after publishing the one I am cooking up right now. New is good. Just wish Udemy could see to what majority of us, the instructors, are complaining about; to embrace us with a little more respect, and care about our pains more, motivate us more. The percentage share on revenue seems too low on our side, the instructors, and huge on Udemy side. Either way, I wish us all greater success with this new look.💪

And hope Udemy turns over a new leave as well on caring and showing it that she cares about her instructors wellness / wellbeing and make us feel less exploited, please.

To the North we move, all we all want is a way forward. Some love, care and respect will go a long way with the new logo and the site new awesome look. There can never be anything glorious as we all grow together, not one party growing at a geometric ratio and the other growing at barely at arithmetic ratio. Udemy needs to just look into the revenue percentage, been a little bit moderate with the percentage cut could go a very long way in making everything better. General more considarate incentive will bring out the best in people, instructors, so certain.

Congratulations to us all, Udemy family.

I like the new changes. Yes the colors are less soothing but they (along with the font and logo) give a much more premium look and serious feel about Udemy.

I can say now Udemy which was a more casual leaning platform is a more serious upward looking learning platform .

The vision matches the brand image now to change the world through learning.

Great stuff Udemy. I hope this will translate to more marketing push upwards to grow the brand .

Nice clean look but this was suggested as some great thing or innovation for us.... it is an update in look, some will love it, others will go so what. The colour purple I like and the font is clean.

I went to have a look at the branding ware to update my website and social media. I won't be - sorry but I was completely underwhelmed. I teach with Udemy, and Grow with Udemy. Grow with me. just don't do it for me. Boring looking - where is the logo with the hat or arrow on it? That is a very common one - but I trust your people have tested it thoroughly and students found it made them want to purchase.

I was hoping for genuine innovation.... for example, the App - STILL after all these years, is a second rate experience for students and instructors alike.

Innovations like easy ways to create promotional coupons for multiple courses for those precious two emails messages we can send out to promote our 'wares' - now that would excite me.

Congrats on the new look! Looks nice to me...

One small note: In the instructor dashboard, there used to be a small red dot just above the "communication" menu item, to indicate there's a new message / Q&A for the instructor. The red dot was very clear to see.

Now, with the new color scheme, this is a dark purple dot over a black background, and is virtually invisible.

I believe the dot color should be changed. I'm not a graphic designer, so not sure what it should be, but I guess a white or light purple will do.

Thanks!

@ChrystieV Come on Chrystie! This is an obvious and easy thing to correct and should have been done within ten minutes of when the issue was raised. Is anyone reading the comments in this thread?

The compilation of graphics that were shared were mostly unusable. They are too wordy, too long, too large and not appealing. The logo is the brand image! Not all those other things.

Yesterday was the day that Instructors were deciding to do something with this branding or not. You people may have worked on this for six months, but you have seconds, minutes, to elicit the behavior you want. You are losing that by refusing to respond to this obvious request, something that should have been the first graphic you shared.

Now or never. Every minute that goes by the interest is being lost!

ChrystieV

@LawrenceMMiller I apologize, requests like this do take some time at Udemy 😬 What seems like a simple request for a logo, must go through several departments for approval. I was informed that the logo is reserved for official Udemy communications, which is why it was not included in the downloads for instructors. The only graphics approved for instructor use at the moment are the ones found in the Instructor social media kit.

LawrenceMMiller

@ChrystieV Absolutely Terrible!

This really should be brought to the attention of @GreggC. This is how fast growing entrepreneurial companies die!  "What seems like a simple request for a logo, must go through several departments for approval. I was informed that the logo is reserved for official Udemy communications, ..."

I know this is beyond your control, but control is the problem. The idea that for instructors to use and promote the Udemy brand/logo has to go through several departments for approval is insane. It means people are losing the ability to make what are obvious right and simple decisions. That is called bureaucracy! It is a statement that we are NOT partners, you do NOT trust us, and you do NOT care whether we promote the Udemy brand.

We were given a zip file of logo versions (at least 20 of them) like these in the past and we used them and we were encouraged to use them. Now, because you "have to go through several departments" we essentially have nothing usable to promote the brand. In the past it was understood that instructors were themselves a marketing channel that brought students to Udemy, and we did! That is obviously not the assumption any longer.

Hello. Hello.

Testing. Testing.

Does anyone read me?

The new site is unreadable.

Over.

It seems to me that the pattern of Udemy's communication to Instructors pertaining to new developments is this:

1. Udemy become absorbed in their own introspective self-affirming enthusiasm for a specific idea.

2. They then make a patronizing announcement in West coast vernacular,  informing Instructors just how wonderful they are, and just how excited they will surely be, inferring just how grateful they should be for the new changes.

3. Instructors then realize that the changes, whether later proven to be beneficial or not, are a fait accomli, implemented without any true dialogue with them.

4. Instructors are then forced to either give in, or raise objections.

5. It then becomes pot luck as to which, if any, of those objections lead to an adjustment of the implementation.

For example: my objection is - and on behalf of all those who struggle to see I am going to give myself permission to shout here:

THE VIOLET TEXT AGAINST BLACK BACKGROUND IS INACCESSIBLE TO THOSE WHO ARE NOT IN THE UPPER ECHELON OF EXCELLENT EYESIGHT.

Will this change?

Does anyone care?

Or will Udemy soon make another patronizing announcement like:

'We really care about our Instructors' feedback. We are committed to accessibility. Have a nice day and know that you are loved. We hear you. We see you. Even if your students cannot clearly see us'.

And so just in case pot luck is on my side, I'll shout out for all those with less than perfect vision who want to improve their lives though education

THE CURRENT REBRAND OBFUSCATES CONTENT BY USING AN INACCESSIBLE  COLOUR COMBINATION.

Have a nice day, and thanks for caring so much.

Meanwhile,  a year has gone by since the issue of bogus accreditation was raised. A month since it was raised vehemently and supposedly acknowledged. Yet not even an interim report on what is happening. And that is only one of many issues raised by Instructors which seem to just linger in the ether while Udemy has the great idea of forcing everyone to squint in order to chose a course.

And before anyone accuses me of bad or unacceptable behavior, and threatens some kind of strike, go invest in some visual impairment simulation spectacles, and spend just an hour browsing the site.

I guarantee you too will be shouting before the hour is up.

It is not fun to struggle to see, and it need not be a struggle to learn.

I mean violet on black. Really. Are you that out of touch?
