Xin chào Udemy Instructors!

We’re excited to share our efforts to expand our presence in the Vietnamese community:

  • In case you missed it - In August, we announced our strategic partnership with FUNiX, the leading online education platform in Vietnam.
  • We’re going to be adding the Vietnamese currency, Dong, to our platform. You can see it as a currency option on the course management pricing page and the price tier matrix in the next few weeks.
  • We’re planning to launch a Vietnamese language version of our site by the end of the year, and, in 2023, we will launch Vietnamese versions of Udemy Business and our Help Center.

Building on our update in August, check out the changes we’ve made to coding exercises in the past few months! We are continuing to improve this tool so that you can offer your learners authentic ways to practice and assess their comprehension.

  1. We released code snippets and auto-completion features to help learners practice similar to an integrated development environment (IDE). Code snippets are templates that make it easier to enter repeating code patterns.
  2. You can now create coding exercises in Java 17 with JUnit5. Java is one of our most popular programming languages, and these improvements could be helpful for the 600,000+ learners who are enrolled in a Java development course.
  3. When learners open coding exercises in a course, they’ll now see a fully-extended environment. It’s a smaller-scale design change, but we’re hoping it improves the user experience for you and your learners.

Beyond these improvements, we’re working on new designs for coding exercises that align with some of the top requests we’ve heard from you and learners. We’ll continue to update the community and this teaching center article as we make progress on the initiative!

Hi everyone,

Following up on September's theme of data & analytics, we wanted to share a few improvements our teams recently made to the Performance dashboard:

  1. We've updated the way we calculate course consumption to better reflect overall learner engagement. Before, the Course Engagement page didn't include time spent engaging on-platform practice activities like quizzes, practice tests, and coding exercises. Now time spent on these activities is included in your Course Engagement report.

We also cleaned up the logic around details like repeat viewing and watch speed. For the curious: repeat viewing counts the same as first-time viewing, and two users watching the same video count as the same number of minutes consumed, even if they watch at different speeds. For those of you with content included in subscriptions (Udemy Business and Personal Plan), this updated way of calculating engagement is now consistent with the calculation used in the Revenue Report, which already included engagement with practice activities.

  2. We've introduced a new metric, minutes consumed per active learner, to save you a trip to your spreadsheets and make it easier to compare engagement across courses. We heard from some of you that this metric provides a clearer idea of which of your courses are successfully driving learner engagement, and which might need some love to get learners moving.

  3. We've added sorting capabilities to the Course Engagement summary report to let you view your courses in ascending or descending order in terms of minutes consumed, number of active students, or the new "minutes consumed per active student" metric. We hope this helps you prioritize your efforts when it comes to updating your courses or planning new ones.

We hope these updates help you continue to create great content that keeps your learners motivated, engaged, and loyal.

Teach on,

Bella Almeida

Hello instructors,

We’ve received several reports of the September Revenue Report not displaying as expected, as well as Promotional Emails and Educational Announcements not being sent out. We understand the importance of these features and apologize for any inconvenience caused. Our Engineering team is working diligently to resolve both issues.

Please continue to report any issues to our Instructor Support team or use this thread to document them. Once we have additional information, and/or once this is resolved, we will update this thread.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work through this matter.

Teach On,

After more than a year of running Personal Plan (a subscription for individual learners) in select English-speaking markets, we're getting ready to include more languages and markets over the rest of the year. Brazil is up first, with subscribers able to access top courses in both Portuguese and English in the next few weeks. After that, we're looking to include German and Spanish content, with other markets to follow.

We've learned and changed a lot about this new offering since we first piloted it last April. These efforts have helped us guide prospective learners to the right experiences for their needs, whether that's a subscription or an individual course purchase. For example, a test in the UK confirmed the value of offering a free trial, while another proved that offering learners tools to schedule dedicated learning time helped them stay on track.

To read more about Personal Plan, including a refresher on what content is included and how instructors are compensated, please read on in the Teaching Center.

Based on learner and instructor feedback from the initial rollout of these updates, we wanted to highlight the following changes:

  • We are extending the deadline from August 15 to August 25 for re-enabling subtitles. You will also no longer be able to turn off native-language subtitles and captions for Udemy Business courses beginning August 25. If you’re affected by these changes you should receive a reminder email this week.
  • We will be requiring subtitles or captions for all English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian courses in the Udemy Business content collection. This excludes Japanese, German, and language-learning courses with subtitles or captions.
  • We will no longer be creating auto-generated subtitles for Mandarin courses due to accuracy issues reported by learners. We will also be unpublishing the subtitles already generated for these courses, but you are free to edit and republish them if you think they are sufficient.

----

As we move into H2, we’re planning on making changes to the way we manage subtitles and captions on the platform to align closer with our accessibility goals. Historically, we’ve created auto-generated subtitles for all English, Spanish, and Portuguese courses on Udemy. This is because we believe subtitles and captions can make courses easier to comprehend with a larger audience, including learners who speak another language and hearing-impaired learners.

At a high level we are building upon what we’re doing today by making the following changes by the end of the year:

  • We plan to expand our auto-generated subtitles to all eligible courses in German, French, Italian, Japanese, and Mandarin by the end of the year.
  • We are investing in an improved auto-generation model to increase the accuracy of transcriptions.
  • We will provide auto-generated subtitles for courses once they reach 20 enrollments in order to prioritize courses with learner engagement.
  • We are requiring subtitles or captions for all courses in the Udemy Business content collection starting August 15th.

These changes are intended to help instructors cater to learners of all backgrounds and to move toward a high standard of accessibility for a growing global audience. To learn more about these updates, read on in the Teaching Center.

As an effort to increase transparency and security for our instructors, we’re creating a new invitation and notification flow when instructors make changes to the co-instructors of a course.

Now when you add a co-instructor to a course, the invitee will receive an email invitation to accept through a link that directs to the instructor platform.

Additionally, instructors with managing permissions will be notified when a co-instructor joins or leaves  a course. We hope these changes will make it easier to manage courses with co-instructors moving forward.

Hi instructors,

The idea of finding your hard work available on a third-party platform is frustrating and this is a concern that Udemy takes seriously. We want to take this opportunity to share some insights on what Udemy’s efforts to fight piracy look like thus far.

In a continued effort to combat piracy, as many may already be aware, we have expanded our partnership with a new anti-piracy vendor, Corsearch. Through this partnership, any instructor can reach out to Corsearch if they discover their course(s) being offered on a third-party platform(s) without their permission. Instructors can fill out the Piracy Reporting Form. Upon receipt of the instructor's piracy report, Corsearch will file a legal notice called a “takedown notice” to major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing to stop the traffic from reaching the pirated content. Removing the pirated links from search engines allows prospective students to instead be pointed toward legitimate publications on Udemy or your own site.

While the specific courses eligible for the program will vary over time, just as before, we have a Piracy Detection Program which is designed to ensure coverage globally for the courses which are exclusive to Udemy and are the highest-trafficked paid courses on Udemy. Under Corsearch, we have increased our course coverage more than before! If you are unsure as to whether or not your course is covered under our current Piracy Detection Program or would like us to review your eligibility in the program, please reach out to us at piracy@udemy.com and we will be happy to assist you.

Corsearch will proactively and regularly monitor major search engines for any piracy-related versions of your Udemy course(s), and send removal notices on the instructor’s behalf if the pirated versions of the Udemy course(s) is found on the top major search engines. To learn more about the Piracy Detection Program or the piracy measures we are currently enforcing, please refer to our Help Center articles and the Intellectual Property Policy

We hope this information helps in better understanding the steps we are currently taking to combat piracy. We appreciate your continuous feedback and support of all our learners and instructors. Don't hesitate to reach out to us directly at piracy@udemy.com with any additional questions you may have- the team will be more than happy to assist you.

We value our instructors at Udemy. We created the Instructor Community to have a dedicated space for our instructors to connect with like-minded individuals to change lives through learning. We’d like to take this space to the next level.

We are considering creating a space for Instructor groups to provide our instructors the ability to team up with instructors near you and instructors like you. For example, there may be a team for Instructors in Turkey, Women Tech Instructors, Instructors with 500K Students. The possibilities are endless. Before we go any further, we wanted to get your input as this space will be for you!

Click here to give us your feedback & let us know if you would be interested in these types of groups.
