" With Emeritus the value added is a certificate or credential. It is a different product, one that is more expensive but serves the customer by putting it on the resume. A pathway of Udemy/Emeritus courses creates more revenue for Udemy. Lets says you have 8 courses but students need to take 4 to get a certificate. You know students who have taken 1 course will be enrolling in the other 3. You are not starting from 0 every month.

@ThomasMitchell @MichaelPog This will be fantastic in the long run. As you may know, there is renewed focus on SCNC students. SCNC stands for Some College No Credential/Degree. As you also may know, only one-third of Americans have college degrees or above. And the stats are even more dismal worldwide. 7% have college degrees. The students want a credential that they can complete online at low cost but is respected worldwide. This is where Emeritus comes in. I work at an Insurance Agency where a very talented agent without a college degree spends her days explaining homeowners insurance and the business pursuits endorsement in particular to doctorates. The 67% of the non-college degree holders in the US and the 93% of non-college degree holders in the world are potential students. They are looking for credentials similar to a bachelors degree. They would however need to complete their courses on a time-table and pass examinations, something that is currently not a requirement at Udemy. The students are paying for the examinations, time-table and credential that is recognized. This is an addition.

Getting to a minimum number of sales every day is certainly the goal. Even with 5 courses my sales do freeze often. I would encourage you to keep at it.

@HilalHakla522 Reading your post in between the lines, I get the sense you are frustrated that you are not getting TRACTION. Traction will come if you have 8-10 quality courses if you are in a very competitive field. Some of you will ask how I got the number 8. Angela Yu has 8 courses and excellent traction and a Best Selling instructor. If you are not in a competitive field you may get traction with just one course. I have 5 and I have better traction than when I had 1 course but to get full traction you will 8-10 courses. If you are familiar with the Mathematical concept of Permutations and Combinations, you know the difference between 20 C 3 versus 20 C 1.

@VladimirsKarols Doodly, Videoscribe, Vyond and Toonly and Raw Shorts and others are all video creation software so you can use them as long as you have a business use subscription. I have taught at Universities so for University videos I used an academic subscription. For Udemy Videos however I have a separate business subscription. The voice speaking in any videos even if created on Doodly has to be your own as per Udemy rules.

@ariyam66 My course currently with the 2.5 rating is 8.5 hours. The negative reviews were probably grumpy students so @PrashantMunshi does have a point and even if not most students have not rated the course.. I plan to add Lecture Plans for each Lecture. I will also include a new section on more statistical analysis. Later I will add some guest speakers. Detailed posts of rating improvement and progress are insightful. My advice to you would be to plan on a 10+ hour course on a topic you are an expert on. @LawrenceMMiller is right about this.

@ariyam66 Let me offer you some friendly competition. Three of my courses are above 4 but one is 2.5 and on Statistics and Business Writing. In the next few months, I will be making major enhancements to the course to improve the rating. We are starting at similar points. Course rated at 2.5. The first thing I will do is provide a word summary for each lecture video. Then I will make an educational announcement to students. Choose one of your courses rated at 2.5 or similar. What is the first thing you will do?

@VladimirsKarols There are many excellent reasons why Instructors should not be using text to speech but here are two key reasons. Udemy courses are designed by experts and expert instructors should be explaining content in their own voices. Udemy is not YouTube. If you use text to speech you may get several instructors using one type of voice. This is not good either. Udemy is primarily a learning platform with real live instructors teaching courses. Very similar to Universities.

I don't use a script but in my latest course I drew up a Lecture Plan for each Lecture. The Lecture Plan is just a set of 10-15 bullet points which I shared with the students. If you have a set of bullet points to cover you can speak extempore and not miss anything and sound natural. When I started teaching online 11 years ago I did a LOT of umms and aahs. Gradually I stopped doing them in a few months. During the Lecture if you want to reorganize your thoughts just pause and don't say anything. You can edit out the pauses during production. With a Lecture Plan you can even record a bullet point twice, decide during production which sounds better and go with that.

@Anonymous I think they are looking for feedback. I would suggest 12 months as a timeframe. Do you like the 12 month timeframe? I have seen some courses that were last updated in 2016.

@Anonymous I would say this is an EXCELLENT move. I think 12 months is a great time-frame. If an instructor has not updated a course in 12 months it should be removed. If a student has not enrolled in 12 months it should be removed. When courses are flagged and removed it should provide the instructor more motivation to buck up and develop better courses.

If you get a lot of reviews it does not matter. If you get 10 1 stars and 20 5 stars, it probably does not matter. That is why you should continually ask for reviews using the Udemy suggested language. "I hope you liked the course but please review a review and share your thoughts either way."

@drewprof Year 1 is usually bad if you are in a competitive category which you are. Even the instructors who have crossed $1 Million will tell you that. Year 2 is still bad but not as bad. Many instructors reached traction in year 3 or 4.

Timeout!!!! I am an expert on IPOs and just looked at the IPO Schedule for March 2021. Udemy is not on it for NYSE or NASDAQ. And Udemy would not list on an overseas exchange as its initial listing. @JohnBura You have certainly made predictions that didn't materialize (e.g. sales in 2019) so this might be one of them. UTime is planning an IPO not Udemy.

@Kain_Ramsay Great Post. Typically you should be an EXPERT when teaching on Udemy. How does one identify an expert. I included 10 criteria in an earlier post: you need to be an expert at what you are teaching. That means having atleast one of the following: 1) an advanced degree (Master's or PhD) 2) extensive field experience 3) published material about you in media 4) record of speaking at conferences 5) published research 6) extensive teaching record 7) Attendance at events that bring you in contact with business and political leaders 😎 Serving on Boards and in the C-Suite 9) Being a member of major organizations 10) Working on projects that are related to Federal or State Governments in any country

@TameraDion No, Not Assumptions but Logical Reasoning. Over the past year, I have NOT SEEN ANY post that said I made 10K on the first day as @Harshal seemed to suggest. He did not state the amount but he stated the number of 1700. If there was such a post I missed it, but I dont believe so. So if he did make such an amount on the first day it is uncommon. Atleast based on those who post in this forum. There is a possibility that there are many who make 10K on the first day but dont discuss it in this forum. If this in indeed the case, most instructors on this forum need to buck up. I see that as not a common scenario. I have also not seen a post where someone has said they made 50K in the first month. Again there may be and those instructors just havent posted about their success. This logically suggests that it is uncommon. Records are based on Uncommon stats. There are many logical reasoning courses on Udemy. You should take one.

Are these all paid students? If they are you have earned more than $10K in your first 48 hours which may be a Udemy record. People reach 1K in revenues after a few months. If this trend continues, you may reach 50K in revenues in your first month which will definitely be a Udemy record. If they are free students, they will disappoint you. Free students dont finish courses timely and rate poorly. Free students are Freeloaders. Are they paid or free?

Someone who has not published a course or is not Udemy staff should not be part of this group. An aspiring instructor can certainly be part of Studio U.

Jam, I am now in my second year in a very competitive field: finance. Here is my advice for you. Your Java course must be the best Java course on Udemy. Because you are a new instructor. If your course is not as good as the best courses on Udemy why will students buy your course? if you were a student would you buy the tenth rank course or the best course? My first course was 2.5 hours. It sold about $20/month atleast better than 0. Then I updated it and now it is 10 hourse. It is doing better. And my course has content that other courses on Udemy and elsewhere dont have. And I make that very clear to students. As a new instructor you have to be better than existing instructors to succeed. Dont put up an average course and expect it to sell above average. It will not work.

Shehla, Great question! I asked this exact same question some months ago. Each Instructor has their own stats based on their students but that is NOT NECESSARILY reflective of the 30 million Udemy student base. I have done some searches on this and I believe that the top 3 countries are US, India and Brazil. Turkey and the UK rounded out the top five. Anyone please feel free to contradict and let us know your sources.

I teach Finance. It requires finding one client and making them so happy that the other opportunities follow. And there are huge differences among Universities. I was speaking to someone from a top school who said, I kid you not, "we put our videos on VImeo." I am thinking to myself "elearning amateur." So yes there are lots of opportunities. I am planning to release a course titled "Teaching College and University Courses Online". I concur with @LawrenceMMiller you should publish your Elearning course first. You can use that to get Consulting Opportunities
