Re: Leadership Update: A New Chapter
- @JohnSmilga
Congratulations on quitting Udemy. I am sure that was a wise decision for you. In any field of creative product development, many will not succeed and should move on to use their talents in other ways. - Generalizing your experience, or mine, to the majority of instructors is most often a mistake. A fair number of us have continued to make a good living on Udemy. So for us it has not been a waste of time.
- No company has figured out how to make this a profitable and stable business. It is still an early stage business and frequent experimentation, and failed experiments, are inevitable., The important thing is that they keep trying to discover new ways to make this successful.
- I would not accuse anyone of "lying." Expecting a result, trying for a result, that then disappoints, is not a lie. It is part of the normal business process.

@GenefaMurph976, you've been an absolute light in the dark here. Happy for you for your opportunity, and sad for us. You have left a great example of how to keep instructors feeling heard and valued.
Best wishes to Zane and the team to continue the work. You will be missed.
Re: Leadership Update: A New Chapter
Thanks @LawrenceMMiller and thanks for calling BS when needed. Hugo and the leadership team will start looking for a new marketing exec and Zane is 100% onboard and will continue to lead the instructor and content strategy team.
Re: Leadership Update: A New Chapter
@GenefaMurph976, I just wanted to thank you personally. Over these five years on the platform, I’ve never seen an executive step forward and truly engage with the instructor community the way you did. It felt genuine, and I deeply appreciate that.
You’ve always shown remarkable energy and brilliance, and I’m certain that everything you do next will go incredibly well. Thank you for showing up, for listening, and for caring. Wishing you all the best in this next chapter.
Re: Leadership Update: A New Chapter
Most definitely @Boris035 and thanks for the latest post on the Production Hub - the team are already added in some of the suggested links from your thread.
Re: Leadership Update: A New Chapter
It’s honestly a joke — predictable, but still a total joke. During one of the meetings, while trying to reassure instructors, she said that she was “in the same boat,” implying that her own job was also at risk if the switch from the marketplace to the subscription model didn’t work out.
Well, it clearly didn’t — at least not for instructors. Many lost a significant portion of their revenue, while Udemy maintained theirs. And once she got a better offer, she simply left. I’m sure she’ll present her time at Udemy as a big success, while in reality, it was quite the opposite.
It’s the same story as Greg Brown, who kept insisting that instructors were the most important part of the platform and that their revenue wouldn’t decline — yet under his “leadership,” it dropped far beyond the mandatory percentage cuts.
I’m honestly glad I decided to step away from Udemy and return to the industry full time when all of this started — it was the right call. At this point, it’s simply a waste of an instructor’s time. The worst part, though, is the constant lying — Udemy keeps saying instructors matter, but their actions tell a completely different story.
