I believe the subscription model represents a short-term approach for Udemy. The revenue instructors earn under the Personal Plan model is significantly lower—often not even equivalent to the earnings from two or three direct course enrollments.

It’s unclear what Udemy’s long-term strategy is for maintaining instructor engagement, but it’s evident that marketplace revenue is declining and student engagement minutes are decreasing.

The instructors voicing concerns are primarily those who are not at the top of their respective categories. Whether Udemy’s management will listen to them remains uncertain, as from Udemy’s perspective, the satisfaction of top instructors may suggest that the platform continues to deliver high-quality courses to learners.

Where will this paradox leads to? Few instructors on the platform thus limiting new instructors and "new" ways of teaching. Thus killing innovation!!

I hate SkillShare buch of lazy courses, reason Udemy was better and popular than skillshare, now they are making heavy mistake and killing innovations production of high skills courses. Only few instructor who are at top will get benefits, rest will leave Udemy.

Personally speaking i purchased a lot of courses from small instructors those were more easy and love to watch than outdated materials by big instructors.

Yes it was definitely better even if it wasn't perfect. I'm very surprised by Udemy's management recent decisions, I think most of them are wrong. Subscriptions are good for "fun" stuff like movies and music. But online courses are like books, they are for people who make the intellectual effort to learn things. These people "collect" books and courses one by one instead. The reason why UB works is completely different, it's because management of various companies assigns learning objectives to their employees, which makes sense and works well. But marketplace should have always remained on a course by course sale basis. There were other ways to monetize courses but the subscription model is probably the wrongest of them. Especially that it also takes away all the incentives rom the instructors to drive their own traffic to Udemy.

Congrats my friend! that is awesome! I think you will love the stability of that income too and you can just focus on doing what you love during the day instead of watching numbers, stats and writing catchy titles for socials, courses etc.

I would have never taken a job offer last year, but now for the first time I am open to it. Perhaps a in-person teaching job at a university? I would take it in a heartbeat and cancel all my social media accounts.

Am I the only one who thinks Udemy was better for both students and instructors before they rolled up this "suck" subscription-based model?

As an Instructor, its seems revenue is declining continuously? My most loved and highly rated course sales are down?

I myself purchased their personal plan, and psychology says if the topic is included in the personal plan, why buy an additional course by paying more?

Same other users may think that way too. I think it's a very useless decision, whoever was in the Udemy meeting to bring a subscription-based model.

Earlier, I also used to buy courses by paying more, and as an instructor, I used to earn a lot; now it's just sinking.

This might be working for Udemy now - but down the line it will just mean that instructors with good courses will avoid putting them on Udemy - and many of the better instructors will leave because of the ever decreasing revenue - and so Udemy will be full of mediocre courses and that may eventually cause it's demise.

The problem is I don't think it's ever going to change so you are best to start working on alternative ways to sell your courses - like via your own website.
