Hi @DanMill428 and @SilWright,
Thanks so much for the kind words! 😊 We’re really excited about the potential this feature has for learners too. Have you had a chance to start creating a role play yet? If so, we’d love to hear your thoughts. And if there’s anything you’d like to see added or improved as you explore it, feel free to let us know.

This looks very interesting! Started working on Role Play lectures as well. A bit challenging though to keep it stick to the content I teach in this course. It keeps on referring to its general knowledge it learned somewhere.

Awesome update, everyone!
I really loved the idea of Role Play, it seems like an amazing way to boost engagement and provide a more practical, hands-on experience for students. I'm already brainstorming ways to use this in my courses.
By the way, is there a timeline yet for making this available in Brazilian Portuguese as well? I think it would be a big hit with Brazilian students.
Also, just curious: will all courses be able to use Role Play, including technical ones, or is it limited to certain types of content? Thanks a lot, guys! Congrats on this innovation! 👏🚀

Hi @MarinaT
Yes, for instance I created names such as Avery Brooks, Jordan Wells, Alex Lin, Chris Mitchell (these are all AI generated names). However I couldn't remember which characters I called Avery so it could be cool to have some consistency. That way the students might feel somewhat of a personal connection. Actually after entering the name there is an autocomplete for previous names, but it could be nice if I could permanently rename character 1 Avery Brooks, character 2 Jordan Wells, etc and it would be awesome if that would update all other role plays that used character 1. This is really a minor request though.
I decided to place the role plays at the end of almost all of my course sections. The course I'm referring to has 43 sections and only 37 seemed suitable for the role play.
Hopefully the students will benefit from this.
Thanks!

Hi @FrankKane
Wow, I had no idea. To be honest I was tempted to add names from South Park or Sesame Street or sometimes I use names from Cryptography (Alice, Bob, Mary, Oscar) but I figured it would be best if ChatGPT would create "random characters" since perhaps not everyone likes South Park.

Hi @JosueGimenes,
We’re glad to hear you’re enjoying the Role Play! Unfortunately, we don’t have a timeline yet for when this feature will be available in other languages, such as Portuguese, but we do have plans to expand, so stay tuned. As for your question about whether this tool is limited to specific subjects (f.e. soft skills), there are no restrictions. The Role Play tool can be used with any course topic.
If there’s anything else you’d like to see, feel free to share your thoughts here in the community thread or by clicking the Feedback button within the Role Play tool 😊.

@MarinaT Thanks for this new feature. Looks exciting! Had a quick question. For a role play do we need to specify the answer to the question at hand in any way? If I add it as a goal to arrive at an answer then students would be able to see the goal while attempting the role play right ? (if so then probably adding as a goal would not be ideal)

When I want to preview my Role Play scenario and I want to chat rather than speak, I get this error. I haven't tested it with the voice mode yet. It occurs after I type my first message, and the AI is unable to generate any message in response. @MarinaT any advice?
EDIT: This seems to occur when I don't allow the microphone. It would be nice to have the option to choose the voice mode or the chat mode.

I've been experimenting with the new feature the past few days. Looks like there are still some things to iron out and improvements to be made, but it is a very promising tool.
My initial take aways for those diving in. Be very specific about when creating the goals you want the student to accomplish in the role play. I find this is true with the current generation of AI in general. If you're not specific in the way you word the goals, keywords and such, I find the AI kind of runs in a loop and won't graduate through the goals with the user. I feel the students will also need to be specific on their responses to complete each goal. To help the students be specific on when writing the role play scenario, giving them explicit items that they should cover with the AI avatar during the role play.
I'm currently using the role play feature as a type of checkpoint for progressing through the course. For example, at the end of a major section, ie. Completed the 101 topics, I have a role play the students can go through with the AI acting as Virtual Team Lead & Onboarding Specialist. The role play is intended to have the students recap their progress on the topics covered in the prior section with the avatar, receive encouragement and re-enforce what they've learned.

Hi @MarinaT
I've really enjoyed working with the Role Plays so far—both creating them and testing them in the 'Preview' mode. What stands out to me is how dynamic and responsive the experience is. The AI seems to interpret the prompts effectively and uses the provided context to shape its tone, behaviour, and responses in a way that feels natural and relevant.
Looking ahead, I’d love to see a feature that supports multi-character team meetings with multiple AI personalities. For example, in a scenario where a company is planning a network refresh, it would be incredibly valuable to simulate a meeting with a Cybersecurity Specialist AI, a Network Engineer AI, and others, all interacting in real time. It would better reflect the reality of workplace dynamics—because let’s be honest, we all spend a fair bit of time in meetings!
Thanks again for a great feature so far—looking forward to what’s next!

@MarinaT. In the "Meeting goals" I would like to have more than 5 steps. If I have a conversation method with 5 or more conversational steps then it would be better to have more than 5 goals. So my teaching materials and handouts align with the working of the AI model. Can we have more than 5 meeting goals/ Steps?

Hi @Kamil,
I'm glad to hear you've already started working with the role-play feature and were able to resolve the issue. As for your feedback about having the option to choose between voice or chat mode, I'll make sure it's shared with the internal team.
Please let us know if there’s anything else you’d like to see!

Hi @DanMill428,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It’s great to hear that you’ve enjoyed working with the Role Play so far. I can see how multi-character team meetings could be valuable for simulating larger, real-life setups, just as you described, and I’ll be sure to share your suggestion with the team 😊.

Hi
I get an error message each time I try to get into role play telling me that role play is 'not supported in my browser size'. Regardless of whether I am using my desktop computer or my laptop, and regardless of the browser size (I tried them all) I still get the same message. I am curious to know if anyone else is having the same issue. Thinking I probably need to contact Udemy Support as possibly the issue is not from my end.

If I add a roleplay and edit it, looks like the rolepay is not refreshing immediatly..is there a timelag for roleplay to get refreshed with a new edited intro sentence?

Hi @SilWright,
I'm sorry for the trouble! Has the issue been resolved in the meantime? Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I double-checked with the team, and it looks like this issue can occur when the browser is zoomed in at 150% or more.
Could you please try reducing the zoom level and see if that allows you to access the role-play section? You can do this by pressing Ctrl + - until the error message disappears.
If you continue experiencing issues after following the steps above, I recommend reaching out to our Instructor Support team directly.
Thank you!

Hi Marina:
Thanks for your comments re the issue I was having with accessing the Role Play feature. As soon as JI reduced the zoom level from 150% to 100%, the error message disappeared!

Hi @MarinaT , I have a technical issue with some Role Play activities - AI keeps me looping when I test it. For example, in my Coaching and Facilitation course, I would like AI to act as a coach and lead a student through a certain framework (e.g. STEPPA, meaning to talk about Subject, Target, Emotion, Perception, Plan, Action). No matter how I tweak the scenario and the first line, it usually starts repeating open-ended questions relevant for step 2 or 3…and I'm unable to move on. Any suggestions?
Btw, I like the Role Play feature a lot - it's awesome once you make the scenario right!
P.S. Maybe I selected a too complicated task? Should I stick to simpler Role Play activities (with fewer steps)?

Hi @Boris035,
Sorry to hear you're running into some trouble with the role play getting stuck in a loop. I’d recommend reaching out to our Instructor Support team so they can take a closer look and make sure everything is functioning as expected from a technical perspective. Also, @KylePew shared some helpful tips above, like being as specific as possible when wording the goals, which might be worth a try if you haven’t already. As for complexity, there aren’t any limitations, but it might be that the tool handles "simpler" scenarios more smoothly for now.
In any case, I’ll pass along your feedback about more complex role plays to the team. And I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying it so far!😊
1 -
Thanks @MarinaT for your prompt answer. Yes, KylePew is right - one should pay attention to details when designing a role-play, and keep testing it for potential loops. I found the feature works perfectly well with more straightforward concepts. For now, I skipped the mentioned task and keep working on others…so I'll come back to this one later and try again…it might be that I just need more practice writing the scenarios, goals, role definition, and similar.
Yet, if your team has any hints on how to deal with more complex tasks (like walking a student via 5+ steps based on open-ended questions), I'll be glad to learn from them. That was my point (hope) when writing the previous message.
Anyway, thanks again!
