What's new in Sales?

Has anyone noticed any changes or improvements in sales this month?

May and June were slow for me, and July seems to be even worse so far. However, I’ve observed a couple of things that might be worth noting. Sales have been sparse this month, though I did notice a “Learner Appreciation Sale” currently running. It’s unclear when it ends, but it seems like a step in the right direction.

One positive trend is that, despite having fewer students, the revenue per student appears to be slightly higher. For example, I’ve had 63 new students across 10 courses this month, generating $322—about $5.10 per student. That may still seem low, but it’s up from the $3.50–$4.00 average I used to see. This could be due to the lack of major sales this month—or perhaps I missed them.

I also saw discussions on reddit at r/Udemy mentioning that the $10 sales may be a thing of the past.

Does anyone have insights into a possible new sales strategy? I understand Udemy doesn’t disclose everything, but any info would be appreciated.

Anyways hopefully things will gradually pick up.

I’ve noticed the same pattern as you. I have a question unrelated to the post, how do you know if a student has enrolled through a personal subscription? Do students signing up with a personal subscription show up in the dashboard?

My revenue is still low and sales are declining every month. It's a pity because I have students asking me for more courses but unfortunately it's just not worth my time. For now I rather spend my time on my online shop wich is growing, let's see what happens towards the end of the year.

Same. At this rate, my July sales will be down about 50% compared to June.

In my case, the first few months of the year were very good—better than many previous ones. However, since April, both sales and earnings from Udemy Business have been steadily declining. This month is no exception. If things stay the same, I estimate around 17% less revenue compared to June, and about 30% less compared to July of last year.

It also seems that Udemy is still running experiments. Some sales are generating around $10 in revenue, which used to be unusual. Still, promotions tend to drive more sales, even if the earnings per sale are lower—typically between $2 and $5.

There was a time Udemy would run sales constantly and you'd see big influxes of students throughout the month when these ran, and trickles when there wasn't any on.

These days, sales seem very rare. They've just started one a few days ago called the "Learned Appreciation Sale" and since that kicked off I've been seeing a massive increase in sales for my courses compared to the start of the month, and a tonne more messages on my Socials and Website. Sure I get less of a cut per sale, but the quantity certainly makes up for it.

I believe they are currently experimenting with what works and what doesn't. If I could give my personal feedback, frequent sales are the way to go. Unfortunately there is a massive cost of living crisis in many parts of the world right now and people want bargains. It's also slightly psychological, right? We're wired to get excited when we see something like "Was $49.99, now $19.99".

In my spare time I sell fashion items at markets and honestly, the reason I do so well is because we sell at a lower price than our competitors. Then when we take our reasonably priced items and mark them on sale even more, suddenly the interest skyrockets. We end up making more because we sold more items on sale than had we not have ran the sale.

Hi Ron,

I think things tend to slow in the summer. People are getting outside more and studying less. I feel that things will pick up and tend to peak around November and December. That's my impression anyway.

I feel the same way. Last year, my December earnings were my all time high but I actually beat that this July, which was an amazing month for me!

What made a big difference was that I finally started paying attention to the Udemy Business option. I focused on improving both the quality and content of my courses, and it really paid off.
