It looks like I am leaving this world the same way that I came into it, bald and broke! lol
Just sharing some of my journey here on Udemy. Follow me for more motivational content and financial advice! :)
Let's all post our revenue graphs for our entire Udemy career and see if we notice a trend! Mine peaked in 22 and stayed really strong until a few months ago (early summer). Notice the gold color (affiliate sales) dropping off a cliff.
Nice work Lindsay! If I would have hit your numbers I would be retired on a beach somewhere sipping margaritas! :)
Holy pinnacle Batman!! Nice work Thomas!
I notice we all have humps in the middle and that Lindsay made a lot of money! Congrats, Lindsay :-).
Sorry, but my screenshot of the color version came out all washed out.
Best of luck, everyone,
-Brian
Robert, I own several of your drawing courses. You're an incredible artist and I enjoy your teaching. All the best, —Brian
It is fun to compare notes and try to figure out the correlations.
Thank you Brian! I have been meaning to pick up some of your courses as well. We both use Clip Studio I see! :)
I didn't realize I've been doing this for 10 years! But, the journey had to end at some point. This is my last year… here anyway.
One of my co- instructors is quite a well known cartoonist. We did ‘Management by Cartoons’ - it was fun.
Very cool! I will look that up! 🙌
Time flies! Nice work and good luck on your journey!
Okay. Confirmed. Everyone's revenue was once good and now sucks. Now I can see what everyone is so mad about. My recent revenue has just been normal bad revenue ;-). —Brian
I have more than double the courses now compared to 2019 and 75% less revenue. 👀 My graph looks like everyone else’s… maybe worse.
If everyones graph going down than how Udemy is earning
That's the point. Udemy is keeping more of instructor's revenue, so our revenue goes down while the company's goes up.
I might be an outlier here but I've added a bunch of courses this year.
I truly think it is mainly because of ad spend costs that increased when Apple rolled out App Tracking Transparency in April of 2021. It drove up ad costs by more than 50% and I think that is where Udemy couldn’t justify the cost per acquisition. I am sure there are other factors as well but it also explains why they are abandoning the marketplace and focusing on Udemy for Business.
Sorry to hear it Scott. You have some amazing content and hopefully it either turns around or you will have opportunities to repurpose the courses one day. Much of what we teach is evergreen for the most part so the value is still there! Best of luck to you!
Udemy for business is their primary focus so it stands to reason that is where they gain most of their profit. Also, with more and more courses flooding into the market, they make more through volume while we compete over a shrinking student base. Here are the amount of courses on Udemy, year by year.
2020 - 183,000
2021 - 185,000
2022 - 213,000
2023 -231,000
2024 - 250,000
Nice work! How many courses did you add in the past couple of years?
Since Dec 2024, I've added 7 courses.
Woah! Way to put in the work! I guess now we know how to keep the growth going. Good luck on your continued success!
