Need help with audio issue

Hello,

I am trying to work with the mic we got at the Udemy co-lab event (thank you Udemy!)

But the audio sounds a bit muffled or like under water. Here is a sample (don't mind the video - I am tinkering with my setup):

Hi Alex,

I took your sample and ran it through Adobe Podcast to process and enhance the audio.

After processing, the voice sounds clearer and more natural, and the underwater / muffled effect is greatly reduced. This suggests the issue could be related to mic placement, gain levels, or some kind of heavy noise reduction/filtering in your current setup.

Hi Alex,

I’m not 100% sure what’s going on, but I’ve had something very similar happen to me. Not with the mics udemy gave us, but with a similar wireless set I use for talking-head videos. In my case, even though the mic was on, the transmitter and receiver weren’t properly linked, so the camera was actually recording with its built-in mic and picking up the room, which sounded a bit “under water” like yours.

My guess is that something similar might be happening on your side — the camera or computer may still be using the internal mic instead of the wireless one.

I wasn't able to get acceptable results from it either :( It was a really nice thought, but its quality just isn't great.

The instructions were pretty badly translated and missing some important information, so maybe I just didn't set it up right. But I'm pretty sure I did.

I have a Rode wireless lav system, which I'm also not crazy about - but sticking with that for now when I need a lav mic.

Thank you! I also tried to put it through the Adobe audio editor, but something didn't sound quite perfect in the audio either…same with the sample you provided. It wasn't the best version of my voice :)

Thank you - I also wonder if it's something I did wrong.

Usually if the camera is using its built-in mic, it picks up on the humming sound of the camera working, which I don't hear in this case.

I asked the audio dude at Udemy what he was wiring me up with, and I wish I wrote it down!

Udemy's recommendation of DJI's wireless lav mic is spot-on; it's extremely popular. I was going to buy it at the beginning of this year, but for some reason, it was out of stock everywhere, so I went with the Godox Magic XT1, which I have no complaints whatsoever.

The Hollyland Lark M2 is also an extremely popular and highly recommended wireless lav.

I use the ATR2100x and it's pretty good. Did not know that Udemy gave those of you who went to the Co-Lab microphones ! What else did they give you guys ?! 😃

That was the big item in the swag bag! Also T-shirts, and a face cleaner wipe to help us look less oily in our videos :) Genefa also rustled up some lapel pins for us after she noticed I was rocking an older one with an outdated Udemy logo.
