🚀 New Feature: AI-Generated Course Summaries Coming to Course CardsAnnounced

Hey Instructors,

We're excited to announce an upcoming enhancement to help potential students discover your courses more efficiently!

What's Happening

We're introducing AI-generated course summaries that will appear when users hover over course cards. These concise summaries will highlight key course information and skills taught, helping learners make faster, more informed decisions about which courses match their needs.

How It Works

  • The AI will generate summaries based on the information you've already provided on your course landing pages
  • These summaries will display in the hover state of course cards
  • We'll be measuring the impact through an A/B test to ensure this feature enhances the student experience

Who's Eligible

For our initial rollout, this feature will be available for:

  • English language courses
  • Instructors who have opted into the GenAI program
  • On Udemy.com only (Marketplace)

Benefits for You

This enhancement aims to increase course discoverability by helping students quickly understand what your course offers, potentially leading to higher engagement and enrollment rates.

No action is required from you at this time. We'll share more details and results as the test progresses.

Teach on,

Ryan

It sounds great! Thanks for this new enhancement.

    GREAT!,

We hope this feature will be available soon, also for courses in the Cervantes language (Spanish).

    Good Feature 👍🏻

Hope this feature will open new doors of opportunities to students and ultimate success to instructors and Udemy.

This looks like a promising enhancement. However, have you tested how AI will generate course summaries for two courses covering the same subject? Currently, instructors use varied styles when creating course landing pages—some include reviews, others highlight key topics, some outline the full curriculum, while others explain how the course connects to their broader course offerings.

It would be interesting to see whether the AI can generate a unique and differentiated course summary, or if it ends up generalizing the landing page content across similar courses.

    Simply awesome. Looking forward.

Sounds interesting - thanks for the update.

Do you have any designs or mock-ups? When exactly will this be rolled out?

@RyanJaress Awesome! That's exactly the feature I suggested to Greg Brown during our conversation last year in Cascais.

    Looking forward to it! 👍🏻

Will the AI be thoroughly trialled before launch?

I ask because I have been trying out the AI for the Q/A.

    Here are some results:

Here's another couple from another course:

@ValentinDespa here are some screenshots - please note this is a test in English only right now on the Logged Out Home Page - if it performs (we are seeing good early signs, but never say yes until we have the results in), the team plan to expand to recommendations units across the site and Search Results page - but per all the comments above we are using the test to ensure quality, differentiation, consistency etc

    @KarolyNyisztor
thank you for helping inform the roadmap

    @GenefaMurph976 thanks for the screenshots!

I've placed the current and the new AI-generated text side by side.

    AI version feedback:

What I do like is that there is a bit less text. However, it does seem less organized and harder to read. In the current version, I like the green checkmarks that keep things a bit more organized.

I will also ditch the "Course summary" heading, which takes up space and doesn't seem to bring anything useful in terms of new info. Instead, why not bring back the number of hours, and other more useful info.

Let me give this feedback @ValentinDespa and ill come back

This is a very good idea

I've seen those AI marketing texts all over the place lately, and they are all the same. Same tone, same rhythm, same usage of nice sounding but ultimately generic and unspecific terms (like 'impactful', 'captivate'). Note how the text on the left gives way more precise information. You can tell that one was written by a person and one by a machine. As a buyer, if it's written by a machine, I won't buy. To me it says, I want to sell you something but cannot be bothered to try and convince you myself to buy it. It's lazy. But that's just me.🤨
