Hi Everyone,
The 3% service and administration fee was part of the existing terms, but inconsistently applied in the past based on market or device -- you may have seen it on sales from students in Japan, for example.
It only applies on purchases where the cost of processing payment is borne by Udemy. So, it's not applied to mobile store transactions, where Apple or Google is processing the payment.
This update was part of the announcement in March: "As part of this change, we’ll also clean up the way we handle the 3% transactional fee described in our existing terms. In the past, this fee was inconsistently applied across different sales, markets, channels, or devices. Moving forward, we’ll ensure we apply it consistently." We know there was a lot of information in the blog, though, and we apologize that this wasn't surfaced prominently enough.
Just to be clear, when we communicated that the new rates were based on the historical blended rate for instructors, this did include consistent application of the service & administration fee. We understand changes in revenue share structure are frustrating and can affect your ability to gauge what your Udemy earnings will look like -- ultimately, our goal is still not to reduce instructor margin, but to align revenue share structure with the marketing investments we need to make to continue to grow the platform.
