Contacting a Student outside of Udemy

Hello,

A student who purchased my course 3 days ago and watched only one percent of the course left me a very poor 1 star review:

"He emphasized the fundamentals. The course is not designed to fully prepare you as a developer. It aims to teach essential aspects of SwiftUI, including networking and other major skills that a developer will need when entering the job market. However, I believe this approach may not be entirely realistic."

I simply have no idea what he is talking about. My course covers just about every aspect imaginable in iOS development. Moreover no where in the course do I claim that the course fully prepares one for the job market.

I found him on social media and he even shares hist whatsapp number to get in touch. I thought of contacting him directly and politely asking what is his problem? His weak 1-star review is devastating for my course. I am sick and tired of students who don't even bother to watch the course content leaves reviews which are complete nonsense.

The frustrating thing is I keep updating the course and improving it and then someone simply does not appreciate my efforts.

Bro, keep your head up by your goals. That student didn't valorate your educational stuff, because he's someone who wants to achieve everything easier on this life. You, me, and too many instructors are putting our soul for producing nice content with the power of educate people, so avoid the behave of being annoyed by that kind of comments from people who has smaller smartness mind as you have with all the courses you're teaching. You have too many students dude. I stalked each course you published at Udemy, and the people is highlighting what you did with good comments and apprecations. Everything on this world is not perfect as we always want it to be. We're gonna always have someone who doesn't trust on our metodology, but you have to show profesionalism as a good instructor and professor here. So, don't give a compliment about what people say about you.

I believe in you, and continue educating people as you always did.

Yes, I got over it. I think I just needed to vent. I did add a new introductory lecture like a course roadmap. Perhaps that will help in the future.

Hi @RonErez Any 1 start rating needs instructor's attention to investigate what mght have irked the student, however small the issue may be. I make it point to take any 1-star rating quite seriously. However I know sometimes 1-star rating is made by the students by mistake also.

Yes, I responded to the review and also reached out to the student directly (through Udemy of course). To ensure my response remained polite and professional, I used ChatGPT to help tone it appropriately. While students often don’t reply, occasionally it does lead to a positive outcome. That said, it can be incredibly aggravating, especially after putting so much effort into creating and updating the course, staying engaged in the Q&A, and supporting students, when someone who likely hasn’t even watched the course leaves a harsh, unfounded review. These bad reviews also directly effect sales. Most of my reviews are 5 star but the occasional 1 star review destroys my ratings.
