What creative assessment methods have you incorporated into your courses?

Assessment design is a critical component of effective learning experiences. Our educational content team has observed that courses with varied and thoughtful assessment strategies often receive higher student satisfaction ratings. While quizzes are the standard tool on Udemy, many instructors have found creative ways to check understanding.

What creative assessment methods have you incorporated into your course design that better measure real learning?

It's very hard to assess understanding. In a physical classroom I can read the students' body language and tell they have no idea what I'm talking about or are getting bored because it is too easy.

The only way I can assess anything is if a student actively discusses alternative solutions in the course Q&A or if they asked why I did one thing compared to another. Other then that it is hard to assess the student undestanding.

I have tried coding exercises on Udemy but they are a nightmare to put together and confusing to both myself and the students. Therefore I have deleted all coding exercises and just created video exercises that I present a problem and later I solve the problem.

I do send challenges to students from time to time via educational announcements but so far as far as I'm aware of only a couple of students sent me solutions to challenges.

I'd be happy to hear what other instructors do.

We run weekly photography challenges for our photo students. These are run across several of our photography courses, and since Udemy doesn't have an option for running this kind of thing within the Udemy platform, we've used several other methods including having students post their submissions on social media or in our student community.

Students love these kind of weekly prompts because it gives them more frequent/updated learning challenges. When we have time, I do review videos where I go through the submitted photos and provide feedback to each student. This is also done off platform, since Udemy doesn't have a livestream / cross-course type of place to share a video like this. Again, students love this direct feedback.

Would love to see features that allow this on Udemy in the future :)

For now, we are adding quizes. But assignments/assessments has different impact so would definitely work on this.
