I noticed sales are falling and i want to know reason why? I saw i am not alone to face this issue. Many instructors too have this problem. Strange! Personal subscription is causing trouble?
Nothing will keep playing in the background. I’m trying to study on the go and while doing stuff. The fact that if I turn my phone screen off or leave the app it stops is extremely discouraging. The fact that their support is essentially useless is extremely discouraging. The fact that you can’t call to resolve an issue is beyond frustrating. Overall, I’m thinking about taking the money I spent on these courses, submitting refunds and going to Coursera because it has background play that actually works. You can’t expect people to ONLY study when they’re sitting in front of their desktop. Whoever made that design should’ve thought about the real world and not his moms basement.
I'm very worried. I update the courses every month, and even so, sales are falling month after month. It's concerning, and we haven't received any response from Udemy to help us.
Sales have been falling for months now
I don't see sales falling. This month my marketplace revenue is almost exactly the same as the previous several months, average for the year. My engagement numbers, which correlate with 80% of my earnings from UB, will be almost exactly average for the past year. You can't look at the graphs of my numbers and conclude anything other than that they are very consistent. Nothing to be thrilled about. Nothing to be depressed about.
Yes, I know. Everyone's situation is different depending on……
I usually don't share but I'm happy to share this time. I've been on Udemy since September 2022. Currently I have 15 courses where only one is successful and the rest usually make very little (on average less than $30 a month for the remaining fourteen courses although occasionally a course might reach $100 especially if it is new). Last Black Friday I made nearly double the amount I made last year although in the past year I've published around 7 courses. On the other hand my sales dropped drastically between March and June of this year, however since I published so many new courses primarily over the summer my revenue has been steadily rising from August-November. The increase in sales is encouraging but I had to put in a lot of work for this to happen and I'm still much lower then what I made exactly a year ago with far less courses.
I have no idea if this reflects anyone else's experience but I'm happy to share. I'm not on UFB since I've never been contacted for UFB.
I do put in a lot of work, including updating courses unless it's a course that has almost no sales in the past year.
I wish everyone success and that sales pick up!
I suspect your sales revenue from Deep Dive iOS 26 & SwiftUI 6: 90-Hour Project-Based Course will fall as it is in the Personal Plan …but on the other hand it may well rise as it is 90 hours so each student that finishes will earn you approx. $54. Your revenue from new courses may boost your earnings because they're not in the Personal Plan so you'll still get $3 (or whatever) per enrolment irrespective of whether students ever start the course.
Sales are falling because:
a. Anyone can create a course on Udemy and so 'anyone' does - and 'anyone' does not even have to be human. So supply of courses on Udemy is increasing quite rapidly
b. Udemy's competitors - both in number and in range of courses - are increasing
c. The growth of AI - free - means people are less likely to enrol in courses unless the course is by someone who is famous and/or an acknowledged expert
d. YouTube is expanding all the time as is Tik Tok
e. The subscription model means you can now enrol and not start many more courses than before for under $10
f. If you are a subscriber you're less likely to ALSO buy a course. There's probably a competitor available in the subscription
g. Negative comments about Udemy some by Instructors - are appearing in more places on the internet plus the Trust Pilot rating is very poor
h. There are many sites offering FREE COUPONS
i. There are many pirate sites
j. Many Instructors have upped their game to survive - this increases competition
While it's true that sales are falling for many (most) domains on Udemy, they are not falling for all domains (such as AI and Technology) I have ~40 courses in these areas and my sales for the past six months have been 5,400, 5,700, 5.500, 5,000, 5,500 and 5,000 (estimated). I am a couple weeks away from releasing an AI certification exam prep course that should bump my monthly sales to over 6,000 since it will be the first course of its kind (I think/hope).
I also know an instructor who has released 3 AI related courses in the past 6 months and has over 350K paid students. There are still sales to be had in the right domain areas. But, overall though, investors are not happy with Udemy as can be seen from their stock price.
I will admit though that this year's Black Friday sale was a complete non-event for me.
