What’s a small change or experiment you tried that had a big impact or worked better than you expected?

For me, one thing that’s helped a lot is continuing to be a student myself. I try to take courses on different platforms to put myself in the student's seat. It’s been eye-opening and has also given me ideas for ways I can improve what I’m doing.

Actually I started to avoid over-editing. Initially, I would spend hours on just a 5 minute video and the results were not amazing. I would zoom in and out too much (students complained about this) and I had an echo in the background. Now I just zoom in a little and if I want to draw attention to a specific place on the screen then I display a red box.

I also like to listen to student requests and implement their requests in my courses or future courses. Finally I try to make shorter videos because they are easier to edit and easier for students to consume - in the past I made 10-20 minute videos which were a bit too long.

Thanks for sharing! I can definitely relate. With shorter attention spans nowadays, I’ve found micro-learning and videos under 10 minutes work best.

I’ve also noticed that people tend to care more about sound quality than video. Not to say visuals aren’t important, but I haven’t seen a big difference in reviews between high-production videos and simpler ones that focus on clear value and good learning.

Switching to a dynamic mic had the biggest impact on my production process (and peace of mind). The bulky Blue Yeti, like all condenser mics, picked up the tiniest noises, from the neighbor's car backfiring to the chopper occasionally passing by.

Giving your course image and promo video some extra attention is probably the biggest bang-for-the-buck thing you can do. Make sure they stand out from your competition (in a good way!)

Oh yes, finding the right mic is so important! It makes a huge difference, since learners often focus on sound quality more than visuals

Definitely! I really wish Udemy had an A/B testing option for course images. It's a lot of trial and error (plus intuition). Having that kind of data would be really interesting and helpful for instructors. Maybe something that'll be added in the future?

I wouldn't say they "focus" on sound. Humans are just far less tolerant of bad audio than bad visuals.

No. Use Marketplace Insights, Udemy search, Google search and trends, and other forums.
