Is anyone else experiencing this? Before, when we launched promotional campaigns, or when Udemy itself did (Black Friday, Back to School, Christmas, etc.), the low prices encouraged impulse purchases: "It's cheap, I'll buy it now and watch it later." And often that "later" never came. But at least those sales benefited both Udemy and us instructors.
Now, with the subscription model, that same impulse of "It's cheap, I'll subscribe now and watch it later" translates into a constant stream of guaranteed monthly revenue for Udemy, whether the user watches a course or not. The difference is that this time, Udemy is the only one who gets that money. We're left out of the equation.
I increasingly feel like we're being left behind, that the platform's focus is increasingly on pushing subscriptions and less and less on investing in campaigns that boost individual course sales. And honestly, I don't know if there's any way to reverse this.
