How do you use lighting to increase the video quality of your courses?

Lighting can be a powerful aspect for recording your online courses. The proper use of lights can improve the overall quality of your videos.

Figuring out lighting can be a fickle task, but once you get into the right setup, your videos will be much cleaner. Everyone has their own different way of properly lighting your recording setup, so I am excited to bring up this question to you all:

Nothing beats natural light! On a sunny day, facing a window is often all it takes, at least here in Florida where the sun is bright. That does the job for things like screencasts with your head in a corner. If there's not enough sun or your desk doesn't face a window, a ring light will do.

But for more demanding situations like a promo video where it needs to be perfect, 3 point lighting is the way. A fill light, key light, and back light combine for a professional look.

Or even better, rent time at a video studio if you can, and leave it to the pros. That's probably not economical for lecture videos, but may be worth it for promo videos if you believe your course is filling an exciting opportunity.

I almost exclusively do screen captures where I am unseen so the only "lighting" I have is setting the IDE to light mode. Once in awhile I'll film myself at the beginning of the section so then I'll turn on the light and open the window and obviously film during the day. The more natural light the better.
