I have used gimp a lot it is very powerful but not very user friendly... if you are looking to do a quick mash up without a lot of whistles and bells you might consider using Microsoft office ppt, google slides, wps ppt, or keynote... create a slide then export it to your computer as jpeg or pdf... adding text the way you want will be much easier.
