Close Captioning - Getting it Done
Udemy provides an exceptional tool to autogenerate your close captions. Close captions are generated for your course after 20 registrations.
In this video post we cover the easy task of checking your captions for accuracy. I have found the captions to be surprisingly accurate with a few exceptions. In my videos I have classroom background noise, soft voices of children, and even lyrics of background music that can create problems with the auto generation. For example, I have no interest in the lyrics of the music, which can appear within the interview content.
What languages are supported?
At this time, Udemy autogenerates English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese. You may upload your own close captions in the desired language.
.vtt Files - what are they?
A VTT file, which stands for Web Video Text Track, is a text-based file format that carries additional information about a web video. This information can include subtitles, captions, descriptions, chapters, and metadata. As such .vtt files not only provides additional information for the student, they also provide Metadata for marketing your course.
If you need to create your own .vtt files you might want to consider a subscription service. Here are two examples of popular .vtt scripting services:
