1 Star Rating

I just received a 1 star review. I asked the student to point out what was wrong in my quizzes and still no answer. This seems way to easy to just give a 1 star review when my other reviews are 3 stars+. Is there any way we can have those reviews taken down or at least have the student explain and if they can't to have the review deleted? It's obviously done in spite! I already got a 5 star review so why a 1????

To overcome the 1-star given by students, try to create a free voucher. Share this free voucher with friends, colleagues, or family. Ask them to watch the video and give a 5 rating. If there are 10 people giving a 5 rating then a 1 rating given by 1 student will not have much impact.😊

You are not alone. We all face similar issues. Udemy will not do anything about it unless the student mentions something related to the platform/network issue. For ex: video buffering issue etc. Otherwise they assume it is course related and might not remove.
We can not satisfy everyone and we also can not force everyone to explain the reasoning. Even If I mention the prerequisites for my courses explicitly, there was a student today left 1 star review mentioning that I did not cover the part in the course which I mentioned as a prerequisite. 😭
If you have more students enrolling, eventually you will not see much impact because of this 1 star.
Good luck.

1 rating is brutal considering the amount of effort in creating course be it practice tests or video course.

Hi,
It is really frustrating. Many instructors already shared their frustration about this in this forum.
In some applications like Uber, if you leave less than 5 stars you are required to write some words. This might be an option, but I understood Udemy didn't opt for it.
What is crazy is that some students might leave 1 star by accident (clicking quickly) and/or are not clear of the implications of such bad review. This really happened to me. I reached out to the student to ask for details, and he told me they didn't pay attention! and didn't take time to change it.
As mentioned on this thread, if there is a comment on something out of your responsibility (like a student leaving 1 star due to platform issue) Udemy will take down that comment - but to my knowledge the 1 star still counts in your global score) [To be confirmed]
The only option is to continue getting enrollments and 5*. There was also one comment on this thread saying to reach out to people and ask for 5* review, I think this is against the rules though.
Good luck.

I am sorry to say, but many times if not all times, it is almost certain case of sabotage. Who gets benefit from sabotage is known to all of us. It is a bad practice.
Unfortunately we need some friends who can help with good ratings to nullify this effect. That Udemy will say, ratings are being manipulated ,😕

Can we email or message a student directly to seek clarification regarding a 1-star review?

Yes, I agree, receiving a 1-star review can be frustrating, especially when you strive to provide quality content. Udemy should find a solution

Yes, bad reviews are unpleasant, but then (1) you can't expect everyone to like you, and (2) be careful what you wish for; the chances are that if the one-star was accompanied by a comment, it would be neither kind, or constructive. Be sure to post a courteous, non-defensive, response. My standard one is "Thanks for rating the course _____. Perhaps you'll become more favorably impressed as you continue on. Meanwhile, I'm glad you're here, hope that you'll enjoy the experience, and will ultimately find it useful." (filling in the blank with the student's name).

It is so frustrating. I create quizzes for various certifications that I took and I thin the issue is when I create the questions and answers on Udemy I might have put the right question(s) as right and vice versa!! I created almost 800 questions so far so I probably made a few mistakes but it doesn't deserve a 1 star. I replied publicly to the student and no replies so far I will send him a DM and to see which questions were wrong!!!

@GeneWarner137 I always reply in a courteous manner. In my case I really need to know which questions were wrong so I can review and review to make sure there's no mistakes. But even the highest quizzes I have taken by reputable instructors had errors but the students would report them and the errrors would be corrected. In my case I have zero idea which ones are wrong!

Well on top of that my only 5 Star review is gone so that course rating is at a big 1.87. I'm looking into web templates to create online content. Might be more work but I will have full control.

Hi @AhmedF649,
As mentioned on this thread, if there is a comment on something out of your responsibility (like a student leaving 1 star due to platform issue) Udemy will take down that comment - but to my knowledge the 1 star still counts in your global score) [To be confirmed]
Just jumping in here to confirm that when the policy team removes a review due to technical issues outside the instructor's control, it is completely removed and does not contribute to the overall course or instructor rating.

Weird that the student that left me a 1 star rating only has my course and did 84% of the course and not finished. I'm sure if I dig I can find who that "student" is. It's obviously done in spite!

@MarinaT - Thank you for the link and clarification.
Legitimate 1-star reviews do stink. It's taken me a while to come to grips with the fact, that I'm not going to please everyone in every situation. I come from teaching in a live, classroom environment, sometimes spending time with students Monday - Friday in a classroom. Sometimes it was tough to get to Friday, after the class, and read through the students reviews of the class. But I learned from the legitimate 1-star reviews as my career progressed. I learned to engage each student, prompt for questions and thoughts, and make sure I interacted with each student. If I then got a 1 star review, there was just something the student didn't like about me or it was on them. I made sure to give everyone the opportunity to be vocal in the classroom.
The same can happen in our courses on Udemy. Encourage your students to communicate through the QA, ask questions, post progress. And, provide a great learning experience for the student. I find, if I do all those things and still see 1-star reviews, and I do, I did what I could and I move on.

I did encourage the student(s) through Q&A or through DM but no replies. Problem is a 1 star review on Udemy can really sink your course

Hello @martyprem, allow me to say this, stop wasting your funds on designing or craeting any template. I can share you some simple insight to get reviews from your existing students.
