Have you ever changed a goal partway through? Why?

Hey instructors!

As online educators, we set goals to keep ourselves focused and motivated. But sometimes, life or circumstances demand that we shift direction. Adjusting our goals can be a necessary part of the process, whether it’s due to new opportunities, unexpected challenges, or changing priorities.

Have you ever changed a goal partway through? Why?

What prompted the change, and how did it impact your progress? Did it feel like a setback, or did it open doors to something even better?

We’d love for you to share your experiences to help others understand that all goals aren’t set in stone!

Yes. There have been times were I'm in the process of recording a new course with the hopes of finalizing by a date I've set. But, while recording I found holes in my outline, more topics need to be added or rearranged or additional exercises need to be created. The list can go on. This sometimes pushes the goal that I set to get a course out by a specific date. In the end the course is better for it. Goals are great and hopefully keep us motivated, but if the goal isn't met, it's not necessarily a failure. Take advantage of the additional time to make it better.

    Yes, for two reasons:

    1. It depends on the nature of the goal. For instance, if the goal is very broad, I might find it unattainable or realize that breaking it down into smaller, more manageable objectives is more practical. On the other hand, if the goal is highly specific—like finishing the recording of a new section for a course—it's usually more straightforward. While it might take longer than anticipated, I’m confident I’ll complete it.
    2. The second reason is my lack of organization. My main tools for staying organized include the Apple Notes app, scraps of paper, and a blackboard in my living room. With so many projects on my plate, I sometimes lose track of what I’m working on.

    That’s about it.

    Happy course creation!
