Xin chào Udemy Instructors!

We’re excited to share our efforts to expand our presence in the Vietnamese community:

  • In case you missed it - In August, we announced our strategic partnership with FUNiX, the leading online education platform in Vietnam.
  • We’re going to be adding the Vietnamese currency, Dong, to our platform. You can see it as a currency option on the course management pricing page and the price tier matrix in the next few weeks.
  • We’re planning to launch a Vietnamese language version of our site by the end of the year, and, in 2023, we will launch Vietnamese versions of Udemy Business and our Help Center.

Hello Instructors!

Earlier this week we held a live webinar discussing Black Friday & Q4 with guest panelists (and Community Champions!)  Lindsay Marsh & Rahul Iyer.

We kicked off the hour-long webinar by asking the panelists the following questions:

  • How do you prepare your courses for Black Friday?
  • What is the #1 tip you would give instructors going into Q4?

Then we opened up the floor to the audience to ask questions, and boy you did not disappoint. Lindsay and Rahul fielded questions about Black Friday, and marketing & each panelist chatted about their own instructor journies.

Watch the replay above and let us know in the comments what your biggest takeaway was.

Hello instructors!

Last week we posted several tips on how you can get prepared for our Black Friday sales. We also thought it might be helpful to give you some insight into how we are preparing for the upcoming promotion. So we asked our Senior Vice President of Marketing, Llibert Argerich, to talk about what we’re doing to get ready for this sales season — and for the long haul.

Give it a watch below, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Building on our update in August, check out the changes we’ve made to coding exercises in the past few months! We are continuing to improve this tool so that you can offer your learners authentic ways to practice and assess their comprehension.

  1. We released code snippets and auto-completion features to help learners practice similar to an integrated development environment (IDE). Code snippets are templates that make it easier to enter repeating code patterns.
  2. You can now create coding exercises in Java 17 with JUnit5. Java is one of our most popular programming languages, and these improvements could be helpful for the 600,000+ learners who are enrolled in a Java development course.
  3. When learners open coding exercises in a course, they’ll now see a fully-extended environment. It’s a smaller-scale design change, but we’re hoping it improves the user experience for you and your learners.

Beyond these improvements, we’re working on new designs for coding exercises that align with some of the top requests we’ve heard from you and learners. We’ll continue to update the community and this teaching center article as we make progress on the initiative!

Hi everyone,

Following up on September's theme of data & analytics, we wanted to share a few improvements our teams recently made to the Performance dashboard:

  1. We've updated the way we calculate course consumption to better reflect overall learner engagement. Before, the Course Engagement page didn't include time spent engaging on-platform practice activities like quizzes, practice tests, and coding exercises. Now time spent on these activities is included in your Course Engagement report.

We also cleaned up the logic around details like repeat viewing and watch speed. For the curious: repeat viewing counts the same as first-time viewing, and two users watching the same video count as the same number of minutes consumed, even if they watch at different speeds. For those of you with content included in subscriptions (Udemy Business and Personal Plan), this updated way of calculating engagement is now consistent with the calculation used in the Revenue Report, which already included engagement with practice activities.

  2. We've introduced a new metric, minutes consumed per active learner, to save you a trip to your spreadsheets and make it easier to compare engagement across courses. We heard from some of you that this metric provides a clearer idea of which of your courses are successfully driving learner engagement, and which might need some love to get learners moving.

  3. We've added sorting capabilities to the Course Engagement summary report to let you view your courses in ascending or descending order in terms of minutes consumed, number of active students, or the new "minutes consumed per active student" metric. We hope this helps you prioritize your efforts when it comes to updating your courses or planning new ones.

We hope these updates help you continue to create great content that keeps your learners motivated, engaged, and loyal.

Teach on,

Bella Almeida

Update (11:00 am PT, October 13) Good news! This issue has now been fixed and you should be able to see your September UB revenue normally. Additionally, as promised, our official documentation on the payment schedule for Udemy Business has been properly updated. Thank you once again for your patience!

Update (16:30 pm PT, October 12) The financial figures (the human-involved part that makes it unfeasible to provide reporting immediately after the month closes) are finalized. The system that calculates each instructor’s share of the pot, including applying withholding tax and co-instructor splits, has been impacted by the same migration work that impacted the payout of August earnings. Our team is working to resolve this issue as swiftly as possible, and we apologize again for the delay.

Update (15:20 pm PT, October 12) The Engineering team just informed us that they have attempted multiple fixes, and unfortunately, the process of updating the Revenue Report failed. A larger change is scheduled to be deployed tomorrow morning, so it's unlikely we'll have a resolution before then. We are truly sorry for this inconvenience. As more information about this technical issue becomes available, we will keep you posted.

Update (11:30 am PT, October 12) Our team has been alerted about a delay in the Udemy Business Revenue Report and is currently working on a solution. We will also be updating our documentation to be more clear about when Udemy Business earnings are posted to the Revenue Report to set better expectations for the future. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and cooperation as our team looks into this. We will update you in this thread if there are any new announcements.

Hi all,

I'm writing to provide an update on the delay that affected the most recent instructor payout.

As we reported Friday, we encountered a number of problems in delivering August payouts, ultimately resulting in payment being issued early Saturday, October 8 versus our expected date of October 7. Instructors using direct US bank transfer for payout have seen a further delay, since money sent by Udemy isn't distributed by banking partners outside of operating hours (including weekends), and Monday the 10th was a US bank holiday. We've received confirmation from our banking partner that these payments are set to be delivered today, Tuesday the 11th.

Some of you asked for an explanation of what went wrong this month. The root cause of the delay was a series of setbacks with migration from our legacy payments system to a new one. This new system will ultimately enable quicker payment processing, as well as open up the door for potential payout improvements in the future, such as automated reattempts of failed payouts. Unfortunately, despite testing conducted before the day of payout, we encountered challenges with this first live use of the new system. Furthermore, because this was our first time using it, we had several additional steps and checks to ensure payouts were delivered correctly, so each issue took more time than usual to resolve and re-check.

We take our responsibility to get you paid accurately and on time seriously, and we're sincerely sorry it didn't happen this time. We look forward to delivering a smooth, timely payout of September earnings next month.

Teach on,
Katie & the Instructor Team

As you might have seen, there is currently an issue with the revenue report where the expected payout date for most months, including August 2022, is displaying as November 7th. We want to reassure you that August payouts are still set to be paid out today, October 7th. We expect to deliver them within the next few hours.

Hello instructors,

We’ve received several reports of the September Revenue Report not displaying as expected, as well as Promotional Emails and Educational Announcements not being sent out. We understand the importance of these features and apologize for any inconvenience caused. Our Engineering team is working diligently to resolve both issues.

Please continue to report any issues to our Instructor Support team or use this thread to document them. Once we have additional information, and/or once this is resolved, we will update this thread.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work through this matter.

After more than a year of running Personal Plan (a subscription for individual learners) in select English-speaking markets, we're getting ready to include more languages and markets over the rest of the year. Brazil is up first, with subscribers able to access top courses in both Portuguese and English in the next few weeks. After that, we're looking to include German and Spanish content, with other markets to follow.

We've learned and changed a lot about this new offering since we first piloted it last April. These efforts have helped us guide prospective learners to the right experiences for their needs, whether that's a subscription or an individual course purchase. For example, a test in the UK confirmed the value of offering a free trial, while another proved that offering learners tools to schedule dedicated learning time helped them stay on track.

To read more about Personal Plan, including a refresher on what content is included and how instructors are compensated, please read on in the Teaching Center.
