Hey Instructor Community!

It’s finally December and that means there’s a new theme! This month’s theme is Udemy Principles.

At Udemy, we have a goal to provide flexible, effective skill development that empowers organizations and individuals. Our values guide us in how we do business and interact with each other. Our Values are to be:

Earnestly Authentic

Individually humble, collectively proud

Always learning

Courageously experimental

Results Driven

Throughout the month of December, we will be reflecting with the community on what Udemy’s principles are and how they could be applied through being an instructor!

As a reminder, don’t forget to sign up for this month’s coffee chat Thursday, December 8th 10:00am PT. We’ll discuss what being an instructor means to you and opportunities to network with your fellow instructors.

You can sign up for the coffee chat here

To kick off the month, we have a question for you.

What reasons motivated you to become an instructor?

Post your response in the comments below!

Hi Instructors,

As this year comes to a close, we’re excited to announce some big, upcoming changes to our coding exercises tool!

  • An improved look for learners. To create an authentic programming experience, our new coding exercise learner experience closely simulates an Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
  • Help your learners when they get stuck. You can now add hints and a related lecture to your coding exercises to help your learners get to the right answer.
  • Create comprehensive solutions. Clarify the right answer in the solution explanation section and create test cases that are now shown to learners so they can better understand where their code is breaking.

Most of these coding exercise improvements are currently in beta testing with a select group of courses. We’ll be slowly rolling out the beta to courses with coding exercises over the next few weeks and aim to launch the new experience for all courses in early 2023. You can learn more at this Teaching Center article. We can’t wait to hear your feedback on the enhanced tool!

Xin chào Udemy Instructors!

We’re excited to share our efforts to expand our presence in the Vietnamese community:

  • In case you missed it - In August, we announced our strategic partnership with FUNiX, the leading online education platform in Vietnam.
  • We’re going to be adding the Vietnamese currency, Dong, to our platform. You can see it as a currency option on the course management pricing page and the price tier matrix in the next few weeks.
  • We’re planning to launch a Vietnamese language version of our site by the end of the year, and, in 2023, we will launch Vietnamese versions of Udemy Business and our Help Center.

Hello Instructors!

Earlier this week we held a live webinar discussing Black Friday & Q4 with guest panelists (and Community Champions!)  Lindsay Marsh & Rahul Iyer.

We kicked off the hour-long webinar by asking the panelists the following questions:

  • How do you prepare your courses for Black Friday?
  • What is the #1 tip you would give instructors going into Q4?

Then we opened up the floor to the audience to ask questions, and boy you did not disappoint. Lindsay and Rahul fielded questions about Black Friday, and marketing & each panelist chatted about their own instructor journies.

Watch the replay above and let us know in the comments what your biggest takeaway was.

Hello instructors!

Last week we posted several tips on how you can get prepared for our Black Friday sales. We also thought it might be helpful to give you some insight into how we are preparing for the upcoming promotion. So we asked our Senior Vice President of Marketing, Llibert Argerich, to talk about what we’re doing to get ready for this sales season — and for the long haul.

Give it a watch below, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Hello instructors,

Our Black Friday sales are almost here!  For those of you who might be new to Udemy, these tend to be Udemy’s largest promotions of the year, bringing in new learners from around the globe and providing you with the potential to grow your enrollments and increase revenue.

To ensure that you are ready for the influx of new learners, The Udemy instructor team has put together an updated list of recommendations for how you can get your course ready in the Teaching Center.

Some of the tips include:

  • Updating your course, practice tests & quizzes
  • Update your course landing page
  • Ensure that your content is accessible
  • Plus, other tips on ratings & reviews

Head on over to the Teaching Center to read the full article. Then be sure to come back here and let us know how you’ll be preparing your courses for Black Friday in the comments!

Building on our update in August, check out the changes we’ve made to coding exercises in the past few months! We are continuing to improve this tool so that you can offer your learners authentic ways to practice and assess their comprehension.

  1. We released code snippets and auto-completion features to help learners practice similar to an integrated development environment (IDE). Code snippets are templates that make it easier to enter repeating code patterns.
  2. You can now create coding exercises in Java 17 with JUnit5. Java is one of our most popular programming languages, and these improvements could be helpful for the 600,000+ learners who are enrolled in a Java development course.
  3. When learners open coding exercises in a course, they’ll now see a fully-extended environment. It’s a smaller-scale design change, but we’re hoping it improves the user experience for you and your learners.

Beyond these improvements, we’re working on new designs for coding exercises that align with some of the top requests we’ve heard from you and learners. We’ll continue to update the community and this teaching center article as we make progress on the initiative!

Hi everyone,

Following up on September's theme of data & analytics, we wanted to share a few improvements our teams recently made to the Performance dashboard:

  1. We've updated the way we calculate course consumption to better reflect overall learner engagement. Before, the Course Engagement page didn't include time spent engaging on-platform practice activities like quizzes, practice tests, and coding exercises. Now time spent on these activities is included in your Course Engagement report.

We also cleaned up the logic around details like repeat viewing and watch speed. For the curious: repeat viewing counts the same as first-time viewing, and two users watching the same video count as the same number of minutes consumed, even if they watch at different speeds. For those of you with content included in subscriptions (Udemy Business and Personal Plan), this updated way of calculating engagement is now consistent with the calculation used in the Revenue Report, which already included engagement with practice activities.

  2. We've introduced a new metric, minutes consumed per active learner, to save you a trip to your spreadsheets and make it easier to compare engagement across courses. We heard from some of you that this metric provides a clearer idea of which of your courses are successfully driving learner engagement, and which might need some love to get learners moving.

  3. We've added sorting capabilities to the Course Engagement summary report to let you view your courses in ascending or descending order in terms of minutes consumed, number of active students, or the new "minutes consumed per active student" metric. We hope this helps you prioritize your efforts when it comes to updating your courses or planning new ones.

We hope these updates help you continue to create great content that keeps your learners motivated, engaged, and loyal.

Teach on,

Bella Almeida
