If you go to your instructor dashboard on Udemy and go into the Tools menu, you'll find the Insights tool. It will tell you the demand for any topic that's currently on the platform, and just as importantly, how much competition you're facing in that topic. Look for the median revenue for the topic; that's probably a reasonable estimate for what you're likely to get from it.

Wish I were bi-lingual! From what I can gather from the translated comments, this is a positive story about how what can seem like questionable decisions can lead to big successes in life. My story is similar - I walked away from a position as a successful senior manager at Amazon and from millions of dollars' worth of stock grants, and moved to Florida without a job. Thanks to Udemy, it all worked out just fine. But, it's important to remind people that most instructors do *not* earn a full-time living on Udemy. We were fortunate. The bigger message, I think, isn't about Udemy, but being willing to take chances (within reason) and try new opportunities that align with your passions and the lifestyle you want. Udemy was one of many avenues I explored for self-employment, and it just happened to be the one that worked out the best. I'd be curious to hear if your story is similar.

You mean you want to quote lines from these books within your course? I think legally, the answer is no (although lots of people do it anyway): http://writersrelief.com/2014/01/31/get-permission-to-use-quotes-in-writing/ It's copyrighted work and can't be used without permission. That said, I think most authors would gladly grant permission to just quote a line or two, with attribution. It's free advertising for them. A quick email to the author is worth the peace of mind, and might even start a new connection to the author you never thought was possible. If you just want to mention the book and not quote from it, sure, that should be fine.

I think it depends on your topic. For highly technical courses, the content of the course itself is likely to become outdated before video standards do. I record at 1080p because I'm in that boat, and that's enough resolution to keep things good for the forseeable future. Streaming 4K video across the world reliably isn't going to happen anytime soon. But, if I had a 4K camera and 4K monitor, and was teaching something more evergreen like a lifestyle topic, I'd probably shoot at higher resolution and just export to 1080, with the ability to increase it later on. Shooting live video at 4K also allows you do do more editing tricks, like simulating multiple cameras by cropping and zooming the image. You'd have to have a beefy computer with lots of storage to do that, though.

For any school that wants your content, always ask for money upfront. Make sure that number is high enough that any reputable site will give it to you. Sometimes it works out.

Luck has little or nothing to do with it. The recipe for success, in any business, including udemy, is to have a precise strategy in mind. In the case of Udemy you need to be familiar with the niche to which you are taking your courses, in order to understand exactly what your potential students need. Another important factor is the mastery of one's niche. Students understand if a teacher is prepared or not compared to what he then teaches. Last element is an efficient promotion strategy, which aims to enhance all that I have written above. You need to find ways to advertise your content, so you can get in touch with as many students as possible. Luck can only be a little help if you're not prepared, but compared to a trained teacher, a lucky one has no chance of success 🙂

I've never done any processing on my audio, and have an instructor review score over 4.5 from hundreds of thousands of happy students. Perhaps it isn't really necessary. I used a Blue Yeti for years, and lately have been using a Shure SM7B. If you just want to boost bass and treble, you could run an XLR mic into a mixer that has EQ knobs. That way the "processing" would be done before your audio is even captured. I use a Mackie ProFX8 mixer which can do this, but I still leave the EQ flat. Nobody's ever complained about the audio quality. You can also influence the sound of your mic just by varying your distance to it. If you want a warmer sound, just get closer to the mic. It may be that you simply have higher standards than your students do, or have different expectations for what "good" audio sounds like.

Being I start another Masters program in September 🤞 for once I have a financial goal to hit this month. Sales have been going well so it's pretty realistic and kind of necessary! This is also my first ever non-content related goal as they are usually about filming or editing.

As a new instructor, that's probably about what you should expect. On average one paid student will net you around $3-4, so that's around 5 students per month. Although Blockchain is a hot topic, it's already saturated with high-quality, established courses that are hard to compete with. There are already 146 courses on this topic, and yours will be #147. You'll need to produce a course that offers more than what's already out there, and do good job of promoting it, in order to succeed in this category.

I feel its important to focus on the long term story of what is happening with our courses, have meaningful goals and and not always get bogged down in the day to day happenings... as another member, said it's easy to get jarred by an occasional negative review. My courses tend to sell steadily, modestly within a niche marke... but after six months hard effort I now have a bestseller amidst my courses, and Udemy is doing a great job helping to promote my courses. So keep on going...

I guess this is the best way to do it. The Blue Yeti is renowned to pick up noises. If you want to use it, it is better to mount it on a boom arm. If you can give up the Blue Yeti, then I would suggest using a headphone with a mic - I have recently bought Sennheiser PC8 mic which is just awesome for my videos that I record screen and myself talking. You may check that as well. All the best!

Yes I had thought along the lines of doing entry level maths to allow students to progress. I have a course called graphical mathematics but it is not complete and I have made it private just now. It covers A level type mathematics all done on a graphical calculator called Desmos (I use this to teach national 5 and Scottish higher pupils (do maths tution as a hobby)). I have erred towards making each course (as much as possible self contained) and relied on the fact that people who search for my courses already have enough mathematical background to get started. Although it is interesting you say Udemy doesn't have a good way of communicating recommended sequences of courses. Maybe this might be the next big step taken by Udemy ? Get a course structure together then find individual instructors to cover each section ? Lot's of ideas. Bye for now Ross

I adopt the mentality that everything I do is a calculated bet. Many of those bets don't pay off, but the ones that do allow me to make more bets. As long as I'm proud of the things I've created in the end, that's enough to keep me motivated. Still, a string of "bad bets" can be disconcerting - and I've had a few lately. But as long as we learn from our mistakes and are proud of our creations and accomplishments, that can keep us going. It's also helpful to be realistic about what the worst-case scenario is, to keep the impact of failure in perspective. If your Udemy income suddenly dried up overnight (which is highly unlikely,) what would really happen? For most of us, we'd just go back to a "day job" or refocus on the one we have, and adjust our lifestyle accordingly. Not the end of the world. It's OK to take risks. For any given project, like creating a course, there can be obstacles as well. What motivates me is the knowledge that the effort spent creating that course has absolutely zero value until that course is released. Quitting means losing all the effort you've put into it thusfar, and nobody wants that!

I will also add that a 30 min course is likely to get a lot of enrolled students if it's free, but for the small % who engage, I don't see reviews being favorable for such a short course. If you were wanting to make short 10-20 minute videos engaging on YouTube might be a better idea to gain students. Add your code into the description. All my YT videos have a very brief bio w/ promo link.

You can't embed YouTube videos in a Udemy course, and in no case can you embed someone else's video in your course if you don't own the rights to that video. Your course needs to consist of your own videos, uploaded to Udemy's platform.

Udemy only accepts video courses; audio-only isn't an option. Is your intent to sync up your audio with some slides, or with video you've recorded? If you can tell us more about the end result you're after, we can certainly help.

Hi @Ashebani Yes, co-instructors can create coupons if given permission from the course settings. Since co-instructors share revenue it would work the same as other sales in the sense that each co-instructor would get the corresponding assigned revenue share percentage of the 97% earned from this instructor coupon sale (The coupon sale would not be given to a single instructor all at once, unless only 1 instructor has all the revenue share percentage assigned, which can happen). I record slides and screencasts separately, and edit them together in Camtasia. I could see you doing this live if you have multiple monitors and something like OBS Studio though. You could have PowerPoint up on one monitor, your screencast on a second, and OBS on a third where you switch between them. Seems like more trouble & complexity than it's worth, though.

Neither you, nor your students, will create AMAZING online coures in 7 days... without being on camera and generating passive income. Your title is promoting a "get rich quick" mentality that has proven NOT to work on Udemy. If you want to be successful you need to become expert in your topic, you need to develop high quality videos, and that generally includes some amount of on camera presence, and the income is not passive. Those who are succeeding are very active, not passive. Good luck.

thank you. yeah, i do know the course structure is flexible and i don't even have to include them. it's just that i watched the Udemy Outline course and while the inclusion of intro and outro makes sense, they didn't really delve into whether they should be separate. just wondering if there's a reason to. But yeah, i agree that the videos should be short for keeping their attention. and that might be 1 reason to split them up. thanks again!
